It closed 14 branches in Belgium last year, and a total of 45 have already disappeared since 2016. 🏪😔 👨🍳🛒 The latest developments at Renmans raise questions about employment contracts and flexibility. It appears that the butchery chain has been able to relocate staff without compulsory redundancies. This underscores the importance of well-crafted employment contracts! 📄💼 The wave of closures continues, with stores vanishing in towns like Herentals, Geel, Mariakerke, and Eeklo. Great article in the The Ken by Seetharaman G on Star Bazaar which is now @ 70% Private Label - an achievement for any grocery retailer. Again under appreciated is that Zudio was incepted out of Star Bazaar - simply segregated the apparel in a different store in the same premises to cater to Gen Z - they don't want to wear clothes bought from the grocery store but from the cooler looking and named store opposite the supermarket works for them. Similarly grocery has also been the beachhead category for Quick Commerce as well. At Frendy we went big on private label early. Today we have 300 SKUs and growing. The ability to sample and to convert users in Tier 3+ towns is easier as there is an inherent trust in the Banner - the Brand of the Retailer that they are buying from which trickles to the products we private label. With respect to the long tail in small towns there is typically a retailer known as the Novelty Store - where you get beauty items, kids toys and other gifts - this is something we are experimenting with as a segregated section within the same premises as the Frendy Mart. Interestingly while we refer to it as a Mart our customers refer to it as the Mall which has got us to accelerate our strategy of being more hub than grocery.

It’s not all about price and scale. JLP will never be the cheapest so will have to be better and different. #strategy There’s millions who love quality, personal attention, experience , service etc. Nothing you will find buying at Tesco. Very exciting news... Better Nature Tempeh is rolling into 100 more Asda stores today 🤩 As a marketer, I spend most of my time thinking about brand awareness, brand fame, driving trial etc. But the truth is, without the right distribution, those metrics are a bit pointless 🤷♀️ Not to say getting them right doesn't help you get the distribution, but they're so interwined and there's no point nailing one without the other. There's still a long way to go to get Better Nature Tempeh's distribution where we want it to be, to allow everyone across the UK (and beyond!) to add it as a supercharged protein staple to their weekly shop. But steps forward like this, especially with our current retailers, are huge and well worth celebrating 🙌 Thanks so much to our fab team for making this happen - from our full-time team members, to advisors, to freelancers, to all the brilliant people in our community who listen to our challanges, support us, give us feedback and so much more. We couldn't grow as we are without each and everyone one of you. I sat in a boardroom a few years ago listening to a number of people sharing lists of businesses and opportunities with me to invest in. I also had my mind on #Pusateri, it wasn’t for sale, but I had ideas on how I could make it bigger and better. How? Think Eataly. I moved on and pursued other potential and realistic opportunities. One day I saw this brand at Saks and I felt it was in the wrong location and partnership, because for me Department Stores were at the end of life stage. Things have changed smaller grocers don’t all have the buying power, the pandemic, and work from home continues to have its impact , not to forget continuous changing consumer behaviors have all taken their toll on city brands with less foot traffic. The Path Toronto’s underground city of shops, is very quiet compared to its former self. But it is also this economy and competition, from the likes of #Eataly which offers a very experiential proposition. Can Pusateri re-emerge from bankruptcy? Americana Restaurants International reported a 44.8% drop in net profit to $80 million for the first half of 2024, with revenues falling 15.2% to $1.05 billion. The revenue decline was attributed to reduced like-for-like sales due to regional geopolitical issues, including a significant boycott affecting the company's operations, despite new store openings. In Q2 2024, revenue decreased by 14.2% year-over-year but grew by 13.3% compared to Q1 2024, driven by market recovery and Eid events. Net profit declined 40.1% from Q2 2023 but rose 85.3% from Q1 2024. The company opened 81 new stores in the first half of 2024, bringing its total to 2,477. It aims to expand cautiously for the rest of the year by adding 175 to 185 new locations.
