Today is my last day with Federated Co-operatives Limited and the Co-operative Retailing System. This is bittersweet; I will miss this team, but I am excited about my next chapter. FCL, and especially the Facilities Design & Development department, which I was a member of, is a great team. Working with this group reminds me what the ICA says on how co-operatives are built: "The answer is 'by people.' People working hard. People understanding the rules, and why co-ops exist. People with a shared purpose who leverage their strength in numbers to distribute quality goods, services, or opportunities. People who share the decision-making process equitably and live the ideals of self-help and self-responsibility." This statement couldn't be more accurate than about this team. Each team member plays a crucial role in the co-operative movement. I am glad I got to play my small part in advancing this 100-year-old co-operative.

The secret of Walmart's success? Sam Walton's grit of service to the customers. Grabbed this line from his book: "Big mansions and flashy cars are not part of Walmart culture. If you get too caught up in that good life, you lose touch with the most important thing: serving the customer." And it makes sense when we look at some of the "quick" successful people around. They think they have cracked the code, lost focus over service and indulged in flashy things. Navigating the Walmart Super-center in Bluffton, SC, today shed light on broader societal issues. A simple quest for paper towels unveiled challenges – from a language barrier to a disheartening lack of dedication among some employees. Not to mention, the cost of paper towels was steep, nearly $28.00, excluding taxes. Seeking assistance, I encountered an employee who, despite a language barrier, refused to help or call someone who could. The frustration escalated, revealing not only a communication gap but also a lack of commitment to customer service. The senior manager on duty, a seemingly inexperienced individual of around 25 years old, acknowledged / identified the staffing shortage, revealing the store is at 40% capacity when it should be 100%. He shared the struggle of hiring, emphasizing the need for a diverse workforce but failed to address the core issue – employees unwilling to fulfill their responsibilities. I asked him to call his supervisor, but he replied, “there is no one else to talk with about the situation.” Despite being polite, the manager seemed to lack ambition, merely committing to talking to the employees who refused to work and who later laughed at the situation. I seriously doubt he even ended up talking with those employees. This experience highlights not only the challenges arising from language barriers and a lack of work ethic but also the need for competent and experienced leadership. It's past time to advocate for a better work culture that prioritizes responsibility and commitment, ensuring a positive customer experience and a stronger community. In my opinion, this issue is not going away and will likely worsen over time. #WorkCulture #CustomerServiceConcerns
