I'm excited to share that TNTP's second report in the Paths of Opportunity research series, The Opportunity Makers, is now available! In our latest report, The Opportunity Makers, we found something inspiring: a diverse group of schools who are changing the game. These trajectory-changing schools are places where students who are below grade-level, don’t just catch up, they thrive! 📊 Read the stories of seven trajectory-changing schools, and discover the three core focus areas that lead to impact: https://ow.ly/Z2hJ50TvfZS

I am happy to announce that our Digital Intro Initiative has received $400,000 in funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The award, made possible through NSF’s Improving Undergraduate STEM Education Program, aims to supercharge high enrollment general education courses by exposing students to modern digital tools in the service of traditional content knowledge. https://lnkd.in/gVQt8_EM Today I celebrated with a kickoff lunch with colleagues and innovators from Wesleyan University’s Quantitative Analysis Center. Joining us was Laura Rojas from Connecticut State Community College - Housatonic and @Fran Roselli Navarro - Manchester This spring, in Introductory Psychology, we will use projects to leverage digital tools, teach technical skills, and introduce students to the field through design and inquiry. https://lnkd.in/gNm9vb4K Check out our new project-based platform OpenLab.

It’s such a blast to start the year speaking to young leaders across the state to showcase the power of young professionals in our rapidly evolving workforce! ✨🚀 As students across the country consider what the future holds for them and how they can get a head start on their chosen pathways, here are some of my top tips: ✨ Find Your Ikigai: Make sure your combining what you love with what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can get paid for. That’s your true purpose. ✨ Push Yourself Outside Your Comfort Zones: Great things never come from comfort zones. If you catch yourself coasting along, think about how you can push yourself to the next level. ✨ Take Care Of Yourself: Your brain is like a computer. If you haven’t shut your laptop down in a few days, have hundreds of tabs open, and are trying to run some complex software, it’s going to be pretty slow and rubbish to use. Your brain is the same. ✨ Say Yes To Opportunities: Take every opportunity that comes your way as a chance to try something new and see whether or not it’s for you. You never know where it might take you! I’m looking forward to an action packed year ahead in classrooms across the country and around the world to show young people all they can achieve!

In November 2023, the Council of Independent Colleges received a grant of $500,000 from Lilly Endowment Inc. The grant will support an ambitious communications capacity-building project, “Telling the Story of Vocational Exploration in Independent Higher Education,” that highlights CIC’s NetVUE (Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education) and the network’s growth and positive impact. https://lnkd.in/eW6_rp7R This grant will be used over a five-year period to increase awareness of NetVUE services and participation in its programs; to increase the capacity of member institutions to narrate the successes of their own vocation-related programming; and to make the benefits of vocational exploration programs more visible, both within member institutions and in the broader cultural conversation about the value of higher education.

One professor organized a challenge for students: turn $5 into the highest return possible in just 2 hours. The class was divided into four groups: 1. The first group bought $1 items at Dollar Tree in bulk and sold them individually to students for a higher price, making $25. 2. The second group bought ingredients and baked popular chocolate chip cookies and sold them at $3 each, earning $66. 3. The third group bought soap for $5 and washed cars in the campus parking lot for $10 each, making $90. 4. The fourth group cold-called 50 companies, inviting them to campus to present their company, culture, and job opportunities in the next hour. They invited all students from campus to attend this ad-hoc event. Four companies agreed, earning them $650. Notice the difference? • The fourth group realized that $5 was a distraction. • They understood that 2 hours wasn’t enough time to do a traditional business and generate outsized return. • They leveraged their most valuable asset – time. Presenting in front of the classroom benefited both recruiting companies and students seeking employment. • The losing groups approached the challenge with linear thinking and achieved predictable outcomes. What can we learn? • Stay focused: Disregard distractions. • Create a strategy: Understand the real problem before jumping to solutions. • Embrace creativity: Think creatively and non-linearly to generate asymmetric outcomes. • Maximize returns: Map potential outcomes and choose the path with the biggest impact.
