This impressive figure underlines the event’s status as the pinnacle of the global aviation industry and highlights the resilience and innovation of the UK aviation sector. Of the deals concluded, 163 firm aircraft orders, worth £4.6 billion, stood out for the UK. These significant orders are testament to the strong demand and confidence in British aviation capabilities. In addition to the aircraft orders, the deals also included 28 firm engine orders, boosting the overall value of the transactions. Today’s agreements included 114 aircraft and optional engine commitments, as well as various service agreements, indicating a strong pipeline of future business. The figures have been published by the ADS Group, a trade association representing the UK’s aerospace, defence, security and space sectors, and organisers of the Farnborough International Airshow. The strong first day total reflects the continued resilience and prosperity of the aerospace industry, despite challenges in regulatory frameworks, supply chains and workforce availability. Kevin Craven, CEO of ADS and Chairman of Farnborough International Airshow, expressed his optimism and pride in the industry’s achievements: “The importance and strength of the Farnborough International Airshow makes today’s announcements unsurprising and very welcome. Our aviation industry remains vibrant and resilient despite challenges in regulatory frameworks, supply chain and workforce. “The UK is home to innovative, ambitious and world-renowned advanced manufacturing companies, both large and small, and we rightly celebrate their impact at the home of British aviation. Our aerospace sector delivers £10.9 billion of value to the UK economy, and in 2023, the UK’s total aerospace exports were worth £20 billion. It is our partnership with our international peers that makes the UK home to a truly open, ambitious and innovative industry.” The deals signed on the first day reinforce the strategic importance of the Farnborough International Airshow in the global aviation and aerospace calendar. Strong Institutions #CSW68 This story from a female captain in Spain perfectly highlights why strengthening institutions with a gender focus matters! Imagine growing up by the sea, drawn to it, but facing societal expectations to pursue a different path. This captain defied them, excelling in a male-dominated field. Strengthening institutions – universities, maritime authorities – means ensuring fair access and opportunities for women like her. This goes beyond enrollment. It's about dismantling unconscious bias, promoting female mentors, and creating policies that support women in reaching leadership roles. Let's create a maritime industry (and all industries!) where women captains are the norm, not the exception. #WomenInMaritime #GenderEquality

I cannot help but agree with the notion that DEI is a threat to the aviation industry, or for that matter, any complex industry/undertaking that requires an extremely high level of demonstrated competency. On that note, one must not disparage the professionals that are already firmly ensconced in said industries. United Airlines has a very solid and extremely proficient pilot base; their flight instructors and maintenance personnel are highly qualified and as such would never qualify anyone to fly/work on an aircraft that were not up to the highest of standards. A lot of this DEI/woke initiative is in so many ways a load of crap to be fed to the gullible via media hungry for controversy so as to sell their advertiser’s products, if not their own…ratings. Plus management must appear on those media outlets to be “with it” and sympathetic so as to appeal to customers to open their wallets and purses because it is all about profits. As a retired pilot I know the dedication and expertise firmly established in ALL of the United State’s airline training programs, and honestly I am insulted that the dedicated crew members currently flying/instructing would be somehow dismissed and insulted by the media’s broad brush of DEI.
The FAA’s DEI hiring plan states: “diversity is integral to achieving FAA’s mission of ensuring safe and efficient travel across our nation and beyond.” No, it isn't. DEI has nothing to do with merit or professional competence. Similarly, United Air Lines is making itself the Bud Light of the airline industry with equal myopia. Operational Excellence and attendant safety require professional objectively in an increasingly complex, technical world. No other litmus test is morally justifiable. Lives depend upon rational thought, not popular social fantasies.
