The Pavilion Seattle Chapter hosted its first dinner last night. 17 registered, and 17 showed up. Someone even drove 2 hours over a snowy mountain pass to make it. Some top themes from the night: 1️⃣ Many Execs are finding themselves back doing IC work. Not just because it's needed but because their ICs or Managers have forgotten 'what good looks like.' 2️⃣ CROs making cold calls with their team, Heads of Marketing evaluating and using new design tools, attending events to show how to network, etc. 3️⃣ Speaking of events, many with higher ACV are sending their teams out to events. There seemed to be a theme of getting folks (both sales and marketing) out of their house/apartment and on the road, visiting customers, and attending events. 4️⃣ The last theme was transitions. Unfortunately, too many exhibitors unintentionally create barriers by setting up large counters and then sitting behind them, engrossed in their phones or tech. This approach not only creates physical distance but also signals disinterest, which can deter meaningful interactions. Human psychology shows that people respond positively to open, inviting environments where they feel welcomed and valued. BE PROACTIVE and ask to attend weekend conferences... Yes you have to sacrifice being away from your family but it's worth it. The connections you make and the opportunity to show upper management your skill set and passion for the company is priceless. You get to meet key opinion leaders outside of your territory. You get to meet industry professionals outside of your company so you have the ability to bet the go to connector for your customers. You get to create leads with prospects who you may never get to meet with otherwise. Sales leaders and managers Choose reps and team members who are hungry and want to be there! Give reps the opportunity to choose a time they would prefer to man the booth. You want your reps at their best. If a rep loves mornings encourage them to take customers to breakfast and be the booth early until lunch. If a rep like myself loves to wine and dine after dinner events let them come in later. Reward a rep for closing a deal not only with a spiff but the ability to choose whether they can do something fun in the city. The combination of choosing hungry reps who proactively want to be there on top of the perks for selling will help create a frenzy for reps who want to attend and maximize sales and success! I’ve spoken to 40 CMOs in January alone and I’m hearing that they’ve all changed their POV on events and conferences. There is a kicker though. They all have different points of view. Needs range from wanting to control an experience, to wanting to get close and intimate with a small group, and most hating booths. I think the move is to PARTNER with your conference or media vendor and not just SPONSOR. All the infrastructure is there to create massive synergies but the way conference and media companies sell is old fashioned and not meeting the modern companies needs. I'm feeling frustrated. I always talk about the importance of bringing in new talent to our industry, but we can't forget the seasoned pros who've given their all to exhibitions and conferences. Lately, it's been disheartening because there just aren't enough senior roles to go around. The crux of it: there's a shortage of senior roles. So, it's time to shine a brighter light on those progressive positions and give something back to those who've done so much for us. This isn't just a problem for my business (and believe me, specialising in recruiting senior event professionals, it's a biggie). It's also a worry because all these experienced pros will soon be looking for new opportunities as they seek to grow and develop. But what happens if they hit that career ceiling? They'll pack their bags. This begs the question: Why are so many top jobs kept hush-hush? Is there a fear of promoting leadership roles? I was 17 when I first attended Cebit. Before then, my interactions with potential clients and business partners had been confined to phone calls and the exchange of product samples. It goes without saying, that amongst these bustling halls of one of the largest tech expos out there, I felt like the tiniest fish in the ocean. Telecom giants were occupying entire halls, extravagant stand parties had people on stilts, live bands, and immersive simulators were on display. I was starstruck — and terrified. Meeting people face-to-face and engaging in conversation on this level felt daunting. To be honest, a bit like a first date. The nerves, the uncertainty — it felt too much. But you know what? It turned out to be one of the most impactful experiences for my business. It’s where I learned that sales isn’t just about making deals over the phone; It’s about building genuine relationships whilst personally shaking hands and sharing coffees with people in real life. And I discovered that — just like dating — the more I put myself out there, the more confident I became. Even in those couple of days, I witnessed first-hand how stepping outside my comfort zone, allowed me to build trust, foster collaboration and ultimately drive my company’s success by engaging with people I had never met before. Why am I telling you this? Take this as encouragement to attend those events you’ve been postponing, strike up that conversation, and make those connections.
