12 years ago #veteran #unemployment sat near 10%. 2012 was the turning point — a pivotal year that changed how the private sector viewed #Veterans as a valued talent pool in the workplace. A dozen years ago yesterday our CEO Kevin Schmiegel wrote this OpEd in POLITICO. entitled “Fighting to Hire Veterans.” At the time Hiring Our Heroes was on a crusade to get companies to hire them. And “Military Friendly” was a badge of honor for employers who thought hiring Veterans was the “right thing to do.” 12 years later, the term “fighting to hire veterans” has a whole new meaning and companies not only realize that hiring them is “right for their business” but that being “military friendly” or “ready” simply isn’t good enough anymore. Over the next few weeks we’ll share 12 more stories — call it a “baker’s dozen” — 13 examples of how 2012 led to real change for Veterans in the workplace — and the start of a journey from “military friendly” to #MilitaryThriving.

"What Would You Say You Do Here?" Organizations everywhere claim they want veteran talent. They want the leadership, discipline, and independence veterans bring to the table. Yet, when it comes to managing and supporting that talent, many companies fall short or fail miserably. This is the reality many veterans face when transitioning into civilian jobs. They’ve been trained to make decisions, take initiative, and lead from the front. In their first post-military job, they’re often met with rigid micromanagement and a lack of real trust. This results in high turnover rates, frustration, and a loss of morale. I’ve seen this play out over and over again. Companies want veterans, but they don’t create the environment veterans need to thrive. It’s not just about hiring veterans. It’s about fostering a culture where they can lead, grow, and contribute in the ways they’re capable of. Veterans don’t need someone to watch over their shoulder, they need leadership that trusts in their experience, skills, and independence. That’s where we come in. We help companies not only attract veteran talent but also build systems and cultures where veterans can thrive, rather than just survive. Let’s stop the revolving door of veteran hires. Let’s start empowering veteran leaders. The Unique Value of Veterans in Corporate America Veterans hold a special place in my heart. As a critical care nurse, I supported them through PTSD, physiological, and clinical crises. Now, in Corporate America, they are my peers, clients, and partners. I see the unique value they bring and the cultural clash they often face in a corporate environment, which challenges them, at times, frustrating and deflating them. We need to understand and support our veterans as they transition to civilian life. They have risked their lives for us, and it's our turn to support them in their journey to success. Veterans bring valuable skills and experiences to the workplace. They are disciplined, resilient, and team-oriented. Their military service involves leadership, strategic thinking, and the ability to work under pressure—qualities that are highly valued in any business setting. To help veterans succeed in corporate America, we can: 1. Provide Mentorship and Training: Pair veterans with experienced mentors and offer training programs to bridge the gap between military and corporate skills. 2. Create a Supportive Environment: Foster a workplace culture that values and understands veterans' unique experiences. Provide access to mental health resources and encourage open communication. 3. Recognize and Utilize Their Strengths: Leverage veterans' leadership, discipline, and problem-solving abilities. Assign roles that align with their skills and offer growth opportunities. By addressing these challenges, we can support our veterans and benefit from their dedication, leadership, and teamwork in corporate roles. #Veterans #CorporateAmerica #SupportOurVeterans #WorkplaceDiversity

Today is National #HireaVeteranDay, and as a veteran-run organization, we’d like to highlight some of the unique qualities that servicemembers can bring to the workplace. 👇 LEADERSHIP- Serving in the military shapes you to be a leader by offering unique opportunities to be in charge of personnel and high value government equipment, often at a young age. TEAMWORK- The @USArmy is often referred to as “the world’s greatest team.” Military service often requires you to overcome huge challenges by working with your fellow servicemembers, setting you up for success on any team in the workplace. WORK ETHIC- Employers want to hire hard workers and serving in the military is hard work. Having a strong work ethic is an invaluable quality and sets employees apart in the workplace. INTEGRITY- Servicemembers sign up to protect the American people, and that’s no small task. It requires a significant amount of integrity to voluntarily put others before yourself in order to protect our country. Leadership, teamwork, work ethic, and integrity are just a few of the unique qualities that veterans can bring to the workplace. Serving in the military grows you as a person which inevitably grows you as a professional. On National #HireaVeteranDay, take time to think about how a veteran could benefit your workplace.
