How can you tell if a fashion brand's claim to sustainability is legitimate? Unfortunately, it's almost impossible. Fast fashion is not only unsustainable, but brands greenwash their products to promote buying one product over another, instead of the better alternative of slowing consumption. False claims create moral-based obligations on consumers to make some purchases over others, overshadowing the value of reuse, reduce, and recycling, which would truly change the environmental and labour scope of fast fashion. I think so many people working in the fashion industry are totally under estimating how the level of needed regulations will require changes that affects how we have all been used to working, concerning all roles throughout the supply chain. Below article reflects on how easy it has been so far to appear sustainable by encouraging to buy vintage with one hand and promoting brands build on fast fashion principles with the other… https://lnkd.in/dBv8q7Rt.

We as consumers can be the solution - that is why I started Rent a Romper. With our kids growing out of clothing in the blink of an eye, we can be mindful of how we buy clothing and work to extend the lifetime of each item. #sustainablefashion #circulareconomy #secondhand
Thanks for sharing this Mightly. I think the issue has many layers, but in reality, if we were to source sustainable fabrics, pay ethical wages, and then price clothing accordingly we would all need to make different decisions about how we use our clothing. We see scary data about how more clothing is being produced every year and worn fewer and fewer times. We all have work to do from the consumer side and the brand side to make more mindful decisions about the future of fashion.

Read my new article on The Teen Magazine outlining ways in which you can contribute to sustainability simply by making some changes in how you purchase and dispose of clothes. In a culture of overconsumption, we as consumers must be mindful of who we buy our clothes from and how we take care of them. We can ensure our wardrobe is sustainable yet affordable and trendy through simple methods like supporting more local and small businesses, getting away from fast fashion, and recycling old clothes. After the parody fast-fashion ad by SNL, Australian Fashion Week and now the Global Fashion Summit, what has been made clearly obvious, is the gap between awareness and action in fast-fashion. We know it’s bad (even those who still partake), but what now? Actions you can take against fast fashion: -reiterate the message that buying less is the most simple and easiest solution to reducing our impact -sharing empowering resources about how to mend, repair, upcycle, restyle, or swap your clothes, or shop second-hand. -realise the irony in the same media outlets simultaneously writing articles about trends to jump on to … -support and buy from brands that are responsible and transparent about their practices, and ask questions if you’re unsure. -embrace a wardrobe that need not be minimal but capsule in the sense that it has longevity and each piece can be worn in different ways/with different pieces. -contacting legislators about proposed fashion-related policy *Although, I must say, it isn’t clear what/if any policy has been proposed in Australia, (I will share anything I find on here) - in the meantime, here is what you can do from a legislation point of view: -contact state or federal representatives to voice support for any developing legislation that incentivises circular fashion models, imposes extended producer responsibility for textile waste, mandates supply chain transparency and restricts greenwashing marketing tactics, pushing for policies banning landfilling or incinerating unsold stock, and advocating for updated Australian Consumer Law guidelines to crack down on vague "sustainable" labelling from fast fashion brands. -sign petitions: (should I create one?!) -advocate for -support campaigns by groups like Ethical Clothing Australia for mandatory due diligence laws to prevent modern slavery. Even without current proposed legislation, amplifying the need for policymakers to prioritise these issues can build momentum. Pointing to examples of progressive policies in other countries can provide a framework for Australia to follow - such as the EU’s recent proposals, which I will explore on here soon …
