Just kicked off a new semester with St. John Henry Newman Institute apprentices. We were discussing Mortimer Adler’s essay, “Labor, Leisure, and Liberal Education.” One of the key takeaways: the end directs the means. The end of liberal education is to make free men, and in the context of the Catholic tradition: to know, love, serve God in this life, and to be with Him forever in the next. According to Adler, liberal education makes use of three modes of perfection: the physical or gymnastic, the moral, and the intellectual. It may be appropriate to add a fourth: the spiritual. It’s on these four pillars that a school rests in achieving its end: preparing the child in light of the end of all man.

Madison, WI – A Capital City with a Lively College Culture University of Wisconsin-Madison This is the largest university in Wisconsin, with a total campus enrollment of over 50,000 students, including representation from all 50 states and over 120 countries. They have an outstanding academic reputation, offer over 125 majors, and have a 20:1 student-to-faculty ratio. Edgewood College This private Catholic college enrolls approximately 2,000 students who are pursuing degrees in the arts and sciences, the humanities, business, education, and nursing. Since 1927, Edgewood has been committed “to the lifelong search for truth.” As a friendly campus focused on fostering a strong community, the students, faculty, and staff of many varied backgrounds partner in the pursuit of a just and compassionate world. When I visited, I learned about the variety of learners at Edgewood - from full-time traditional aged undergraduate students to adult students and on-line students and graduate students.  This independent liberal arts college offers many opportunities for students to connect learning, beliefs, and action. They have over 40 majors and an average class size of 15. Additional offerings include an Honors program, study abroad opportunities, and internship options. Another bonus is their collaborative program with UW-Madison, in which students can take a UW-Madison course, as often as once each semester, to supplement the instructional resources of this smaller college. The 55-acre campus also has access to the hiking and biking trails of Lake Wingra, offers NCAA Division III sports, and features many extracurriculars for students to get involved in. Edgewood College may be a good option for students looking for a small college experience in a big college town. August 1 in Student Affairs: A Time for Reflection and Renewal As summer draws to a close and we prepare for the new academic year, keep the following in mind: 1. It’s perfectly okay if you didn’t complete every project you set out to tackle this summer. 2. It’s perfectly okay if you feel behind in your preparations. 3. It’s perfectly okay if you feel as if you need a bit more time to get ready before students return. Extend yourself some grace. The attitude and energy we bring to our work with students will far outweigh the summer projects left unfinished. This summer has been challenging for many of us, with the complexities of FAFSA, enrollment numbers, maintenance upgrades, and more. Today I need to take a minute to reflect on the week that was… Last week at Frost*collective we delivered a place strategy that was truly grounded in community needs. As I’m still exploring the world of all things Place it’s fascinating to write a strategy with such a holistic approach – factoring in more than just the terrain and the site itself but also technology, activation, natural elements, on-site services, and cultural heritage. What's on paper is not just a vision for a Place, but a transformative call to action for a new way of living. Thursday night also marked my graduation from the Assisterhood program, a journey where I had the privilege of working with my wonderful mentor, Feryx Hui Ming Lim, to discuss strategies and opportunities for my business, The Georgie Collective. Her fresh eyes and ideas have breathed new life into my approach. 😊 Adding to the whirlwind of a week, the last few days were spent immersed in my Masters at UTS TD School. As I come closer to the end of my Masters presenting my research to the awesome academics and my ever-inspiring cohort was a significant milestone. I can’t wait to share my final body of work next year. From developing place strategies to graduating, and diving deep into Masters I’m definitely feeling the hustle.
