In his book, The Rhetoric, Aristotle said that speakers convinced their audiences in three main ways. With appeals to logic (logos), emotion (pathos), and the credibility of the speaker (ethos). Of these, Aristotle thought ethos was potentially the most powerful. Basically, we tend to believe those speakers that seem believable; those who sound like experts in command of their content. As with many parts of rhetoric, you should have command of your content, but you should also sound like you have command of your content. It’s not enough to be an expert, you also have to sound like an expert.

You have to prove that you’re listening. Otherwise, people assume you’re just waiting to talk. The easiest way to do this? Loop for understanding. As A Man Thinketh would probably be considered the foundational text for the personal development genre. It's a very quick book, but its pages are jam packed with profound information. Perhaps it's not as profound now, but I'm sure in 1902 most people had never even considered most of this stuff. As we go through this book, you'll likely notice that the words Allen uses are simple and the message he conveys is fairly simple. Whereas in How To Attract Success, there was definitely a more scholarly tone, As A Man Thinketh is very common-- meaning that you can tell Allen wasn't trying to appear intellectual in his writing. So in tonight's first quote, we start with the basis of the law of attraction: thoughts lead to actions and actions determine how we feel. Good thoughts lead to good actions and result in good feelings, whereas bad thoughts lead to bad actions and result in bad feelings.
