This essential guide offers a simple 5-part framework that will help you have honest and enlightening conversations despite deep and fundamental disagreements. Divisions are on the rise around the world, and 2024 may well be a peak year. We’re losing the ability to disagree without dehumanizing. There is a deep need for this practical and accessible guide to having challenging conversations in any situation, from the workplace to the classroom to the dinner table. It’s not about saying the right words at the right time but something vastly deeper. In this book, you’ll discover the 5 pillars of respectfully disagreeing: ▶️ Challenge your perspective ▶️ Be the student ▶️ Cultivate your curiosity ▶️ Seek the gray ▶️ Agree to respect But this is not a weighty tome. Each chapter features a cartoon, and Justin Jones-Fosu tackles this serious subject with a playful and compassionate tone. For example, he writes “I have become more and more intentional in my desire to respectfully disagree with others (except those who think putting ketchup on eggs is wrong…there is no hope for respect there).” With a wide range of examples and exercises throughout, this is a timely and reader-friendly handbook to disagreeing with someone’s ideology while passionately pursuing their humanity. #books #politics #communication

In his book, The Rhetoric, Aristotle said that speakers convinced their audiences in three main ways. With appeals to logic (logos), emotion (pathos), and the credibility of the speaker (ethos). Of these, Aristotle thought ethos was potentially the most powerful. Basically, we tend to believe those speakers that seem believable; those who sound like experts in command of their content. As with many parts of rhetoric, you should have command of your content, but you should also sound like you have command of your content. It’s not enough to be an expert, you also have to sound like an expert.

First feedback arrives : "I am an avid reader of psychology and business books, so I was thrilled to be asked by Hans (a genuinely lovely man) to read his new book ‘Beyond Words’. For me, the sign of a good book is one where I find myself being able to relate totally with the content and that the learnings and instructions resonate with me. This is one such book. Hans, who is a natural communicator in person, has been able to bring some of that magic to the pages of this book. It will help you understand yourself, other people and the way that we communicate with one another, hopefully for the benefit of all. The book is just technical enough to give you real world examples and techniques for you to try without getting bogged down. So, if you are someone who wants to understand themselves and other people better this book is for you 😊

In his book Supercommunicators, the writer Charles Duhigg argues that you can learn to get better at connecting with people. A rich, deep conversation can be wonderful, yet feels rare in day-to-day life. Whether it's with your partner, family or a colleague, it's easy to find yourself talking at cross-purposes or unintentionally falling into pointless disputes, without ever understanding one another. Readers are Empathetic: How Reading Expands Our Minds As readers, we often get lost in the stories and worlds within the pages of a book. But did you know that reading also has a profound impact on our ability to understand and connect with others? Reading expands the horizon of our minds, allowing us to: 1. Step into the shoes of characters from diverse backgrounds and experiences. 2. Gain new perspectives on complex issues and challenges. 3. Develop a deeper understanding of human emotions and motivations. 4. Cultivate empathy and compassion for others. By immersing ourselves in stories, we become more open-minded and accommodating. We begin to see the world from different angles, and our minds become more flexible and adaptable. In world where division and polarization often seem to dominate the headlines, reading offers a powerful antidote. By reading widely and often, we can bridge the gaps between ourselves and others, fostering a more empathetic and compassionate society. So, let's celebrate the power of reading to connect us and expand our minds! Share with me your favorite books that have helped you develop empathy and understanding. Mine was, 'Veronika Decides to Die' by Paulo Coelho. #ReadingIsEmpathy #BookLoversUnite. 😍

You have to prove that you’re listening. Otherwise, people assume you’re just waiting to talk. The easiest way to do this? Loop for understanding. Pulitzer prize-winning reporter and author of the new book “Supercommunicators” Charles Duhigg lays out the four steps: 1. Listen to what someone says. 2. Ask questions to clarify. 3. Tell them in your own words what you heard. 4. Ask if you got it right. When you do this, conflict disappears. And people actually want to hear what you have to say. This week, loop for understanding and watch what happens. — Found this helpful? Repost for others. ♻️ Want more content like this? Follow me for more.

As A Man Thinketh would probably be considered the foundational text for the personal development genre. It's a very quick book, but its pages are jam packed with profound information. Perhaps it's not as profound now, but I'm sure in 1902 most people had never even considered most of this stuff. As we go through this book, you'll likely notice that the words Allen uses are simple and the message he conveys is fairly simple. Whereas in How To Attract Success, there was definitely a more scholarly tone, As A Man Thinketh is very common-- meaning that you can tell Allen wasn't trying to appear intellectual in his writing. So in tonight's first quote, we start with the basis of the law of attraction: thoughts lead to actions and actions determine how we feel. Good thoughts lead to good actions and result in good feelings, whereas bad thoughts lead to bad actions and result in bad feelings. Do you agree with Allen or do you think there's more to it? #PersonaCoach #topnotchpersona #greatnessawaits #JamesAllen #asamanthinketh #leadersarereaders #innerpower #winnersmindset #empoweryourself #lawofattraction #motivationalmonday #newweeknewyou #theprosperitybible #keepthefaith #selfbelief
