"Ben, I'm just getting out of a warzone." Those were the first words I heard from my brother after days of radio silence following Hurricane Helene’s devastation the #Asheville area. I embarrassingly hadn’t fully grasped the severity until he called, his shaky voice thick with exhaustion, recounting the chaos he’d faced: abandoning his car when it ran out of gas, navigating flooded streets, downed trees, and debris from homes and businesses we love scattered across every road. I was choking up on the phone. Many of our favorite areas—like the River Arts District, Chimney Rock, and Old Fort—were badly damaged, and some, heartbreakingly, were destroyed entirely. It feels like memories were swept away with the floodwaters. Just a short time ago, my family, nearly 20 members deep, gathered at Hillman Beer in Old Fort to share laughter and stories. You can see the brewery’s structure in the distance in the picture below, thankfully still standing. Now, some of these family members are displaced, forced to wait as power, water, and essential infrastructure are restored. This is feeling personal. In contrast to the devastation, there’s a glimmer of hope as humanity rises to meet the crisis. Support is pouring in, with funds being raised to rebuild, and I have no doubt that this community will emerge stronger than ever. WHOA! It's common to remind my teams to take a moment and celebrate the wins. #NeverForget is a phrase that will stay with me the rest of my life. On September 11, 2001, I was sitting in my 7th grade health class when our teacher walked in, panicking with tears streaming down her face. She wheeled in the cart with a TV strapped down, and we watched in disbelief as the World Trade Center towers were hit by planes and collapsed before our eyes. A numbing fear settled over us, unsure of what would happen next. Many of us remember how the days unfolded after that tragic morning, but what stands out most is how America came together. In the face of unimaginable tragedy, we united and moved forward stronger than ever. It was amazing to see the shining light after an event so dark. It's a reminder of the resilience and spirit that defines us. The events of 9/11 have, unintentionally, become deeply ingrained in who I am. That tragedy uncovered a resilience in me that I didn’t realize I had at such a young age, and it continues to shape who I am today and will in the future. Today marks the anniversary of D-Day, a historic day of immense courage and sacrifice. On June 6, 1944, #Allied forces united to storm the beaches of Normandy, a turning point in World War II. This day reminds us of the power of determination, teamwork, and strategic planning. Military history and leadership biographies have always fascinated me and have significantly shaped who I am and how I approach business. It provides extraordinary symbolism. In modern business culture, D-Day symbolizes the importance of collaboration, resilience, and decisive action. Just as the #Allied forces came together to achieve a common goal, successful businesses thrive on unity and a shared vision. I find a connection in that my company's name begins with #Allied. A way to honor the heroes of D-Day is by embodying a culture of determination, cooperation, and strategic foresight in our workplace that they bravely exuded on that day. Interesting stats out of BloombergNEF. In 2023, the global energy storage market experienced a significant surge, nearly tripling in size, marking the largest year-on-year increase on record. This growth is attributed to plummeting prices, particularly notable in China, where costs for turnkey energy storage systems hit a record low of $115 per kilowatt-hour. Following last year's record global additions of 45 GW (97GW-hours), further robust growth is anticipated in 2024, with global capacity expected to surpass 100 GW-hours for the first time. Forecasts by BloombergNEF project a substantial expansion, with the global energy storage market reaching 137 GW/442 GW-hours by 2030, driven by mandates, subsidies, and emerging support schemes worldwide.
