I was fired from my remote job without a heads up 🙈. Towards the end of 2016, I found an amazing opportunity to work remotely with a company. The best part was that I didn’t need to work via telephone. When they extended the job offer, I was ecstatic! I could work when my oldest was in preschool and do some work in the evenings since it was a 1099 position. Onboarding was pretty straighforward with their policies, but I was still a little confused on their processes. Still, they said it would be a gradual process and I would get more work when I seemed to grasp the work. I worked for about a month then one day I couldn’t log in. I reached out to their HR and tech support and no one could give me a straight answer. I later learned I had got something wrong during one of my shifts and because no one corrected me on it, I kept making the same mistake, thinking things were good. There was no project manager, or anyone for that matter, that gave me or others reviews on our work, so we were just guessing based on the little information they gave us on how to do our job. Down the line, this company ended up rebranding due to terrible reviews from other staff and now goes under another name. I’m not sure if they still offer the same kind of work. This experience really taught me how valuable feedback is and how damaging it can be for both parties if no one speaks up. Have you ever had a not so good experience with a company? Wednesday's Words of Wisdom (2): With the number of people out of work, many cannot relocate for personal reasons. So, I ask... Sr. Leaders / Business Influencers, please reconsider your return-to-office policy. (Hear me out.) For many, you have open positions in your organization that do not NEED to be onsite. For some, your managers would be willing to hire a remote employee, but you've made your preference clear, and they do not feel you would truly support them making a virtual placement. --- Leaders, be a positive difference maker and empower your managers to confidently hire a qualified individual for their team, even if that means hiring someone to work remotely.
