Ben Carson-Brown’s Post

Olá! Over the last few years, I have been dreaming of a new professional project. As I contemplated what was next, Rui Abecassis was doing the same; after 10 years of collaboration, we hoped that our next steps would converge, and they have! We both wanted our projects to be related to wine (and Portugal, of course) and to demonstrate three principles: Product, Planet and People. Product: Great, real wines that not only have a point of view but also bring people together  Planet: A commitment to environmental sustainability People: Evolved employment practices and social responsibility ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ We found these principles alive and well at the Esporão Company, one of Portugal’s most respected producers. With them, we have launched Cultivamos! (continued in comments)

(2/3) “Cultivamos” means “we cultivate” in Portuguese...but the name has even more meaning than that. It signifies:⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ 1)  The cultivation of community and land 2)  Cultivars:  a combination of the words “cultivate” + “variety” referring to the many types of grapes and olives that grow in Portugal 3) It’s a collective verb, representing something we all do together  4) And it ends in “Vamos” … so “let’s go!” ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ We are cultivating a community of wine professionals and culinary leaders—connecting them to Portugal through wine, olive oil, people and place. We launch with the collaboration of some of our most talented colleagues of the last decades. See the Team page at Cultivamos.com … you’re sure to recognize many of them!⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ We launch representing three estates in Portugal: Herdade do Esporão in Alentejo, Quinta dos Murças in the Douro River Valley, and Quinta do Ameal in the Lima subzone of Vinho Verde.⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ We launch representing what may be the most ambitious and exciting olive oil program in Portugal, as well as a series of regional wines from Monte Velho, Assobio, and Bico Amarelo with more to come.

(3/3) While the starting business model is classic importing, we believe our focus is distinct. The enthusiasm around travel to Portugal is astounding, and we will be able to connect wine-loving travelers to the people and places that are so illustrative of the magic of Portugal. Furthermore, we are working to build a library of educational assets that will allow the wine and culinary communities to explore the myriad curiosities that make Portugal so intriguing and worthy of renewed focus.    We want everyone in America who is interested in wine, olive oil and Portugal to know first about the great work the Esporão Company has been doing over the last 50 years. Leaders in wine and olive oil quality and offerings, leaders in environmental commitment and probably Portugal’s most socially advanced winery, it’s been a great honor to be given the responsibility and opportunity to share these products, experiences and company culture. Visit our website to see what we intend to do in America as we share the stories and experiences that Portugal presents. Thank you ... Cultivamos!⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
