Summer jobs are seeing a revival! ☀️ As summer approaches, more students are seeking part-time and temporary jobs. Through the classes I teach and the appointments I have with students, I am always encouraging students to not discount ANY type of experience they've had whether it be work, internship, volunteer, project work,on-campus jobs etc. They are all valid and they are all helping you grow. If you're struggling to see how your high school or summer gig can benefit your career, come in to see a career coach (slcd.appointments.umn.edu)! We can break it down and look at all of the valuable skills you've gained and then strategize how to articulate this on your resume and in interviews. Great article. https://lnkd.in/dm3KC-xa

Degree in hand, but stuck in a job that feels like a mismatch? You’re not the only one. Over half of all Americans with college degrees work in positions that neither require a bachelor's degree nor make use of the skills they learned to get one. Even worse, they can end up staying there their whole professional lives. The Burning Glass Institute and the Strada Institute for the Future of Work recently shed light on this issue. Half of grads end up in jobs they didn't need to go to college for, even in a booming market. Roles in retail, hospitality, and manufacturing sectors are common culprits. So, what can we do to avoid the underemployment trap? 1. Choose Your Major Wisely: A college degree isn’t a golden ticket to a high-paying job. The secret sauce? Your major! Nursing grads have a better shot at using their skills than criminal justice majors. 2. Internships Matter: While pursuing your degree, snagging an internship reduces the risk of underemployment by almost 50%. It’s like a backstage pass to the career you’re aiming for! 3. Stay on Course: Stick to jobs within your field of interest. It increases your chances of landing that high-paying position you dream of. What’s your take? Have you faced underemployment after graduation? #highered #careerpaths #underemployment #gradlife

10,000+ high-level business students connected with rewarding career opportunities | LinkedIn Best Talent Voices Finalist
In Canada, there are two mandatory business co-op programs. Outside of that, every other business student in the country seeks summer opportunities in their field. As a result, most summer students aren't restricted by co-op timelines, and many employers start their recruitment with that in mind. While opportunities are abundant, many employers have already started, and some have already completed, their summer hiring for co-op and internship roles. We've already made more than one hundred opportunities available to our students for summer 2024. In the next 4-6 weeks, you can expect roughly 65% of the total opportunities for the summer to reach their deadline. That's not a scare tactic; that is a fact. Employers are competing for talent, and the longer they wait, the smaller the pool of available talent becomes. This is your reminder that you can't afford to delay starting your job search. Employers have already fired the starter's gun; unfortunately, some students in mandatory programs don't even have their sneakers on. #Students #JobSearch #Coop #SummerJob Photo by Braden Collum on Unsplash

Not enough people talk about how graduating from college can be a really scary time. It can feel overwhelming to suddenly be expected to have a job lined up to launch into your career. (Not to mention the looming pressure of student debts.) While many jobs we work on are for more seasoned professionals at Primary Services, I'm very excited to share we will be conducting another Open House for recent grads! If you're interested in getting feedback on your resume, your interview skills, and learning about real job opportunities then send me a message to set you up with a recruiter. If you want to learn what I wish I had known as a first-time job hunter then keep reading... 1. Job titles denote seniority. This might seem like a "no duh" but understanding how they communicate level of experience is helpful during the job search. Coordinators, Assistants, and "Junior" titles are more entry-level and expect maybe an internship or max a few years of experience. Associates average around 3+ years of experience (but this one can vary wildly depending on the industry.) Specialists and Managers are usually expected to have around 5+ years of experience in the corporate world. Keep this in mind as you job hunt. It'll probably be a waste of your time to look at most jobs with the title specialist. 2. Networking really is helpful. Don't underestimate the simple power of talking to professionals in your desired field or connecting with people at the companies you are interested in working for. 3. Do your due diligence on companies you are applying for. Don't just apply for the first job you see that says "college grads!" Make sure you look at their website and research the people who work there. There are scams out there so do be cautious. 4. Don't give up!
