EVERY DAY... The scholar-athletes of Oakland Genesis wake up and hit the ground running (that is, after a well-deserved snooze or two on the alarm clock). The youth in our programs have a lot going on—school, soccer, family responsibilities, work commitments, extracurricular activities, and more—and it’s our mission to support them as they try to find their place in this chaotic and vibrant city we call home. We do this by providing individualized programming tailored to each of our participants’ needs, from college essay support and academic counseling to nutritional education and competitive soccer coaching. The best part? All our programs are 100% free for Oakland youth and their families. But we don't want to just talk about our work; we want you to see it in action. In the video below, you'll get a glimpse into a day in the life of two of our exceptional scholar-athletes, Yaretzi and Askari. You’ll see their neighborhoods and schools. You’ll meet their families and their mentors. And most importantly, you'll hear from both of them about how Oakland Genesis has played a vital role in shaping them into confident students, footballers, and people. We are so proud of the achievements of Yaretzi, Askari, and the 2000+ youth we've supported since our inception in 2019. And yet, there are scores of talented youth in Oakland still in need of programming—and with your support, we can try to reach them. As part of our Equal Play Campaign, which is dedicated to breaking down barriers preventing under-resourced youth from accessing high-level soccer, we have set an ambitious goal to raise $300,000 by the end of 2023. I don't have a dog in this hunt but can speak about my wife's experience as a teacher at a Title I school in a different suburban school district here in the KC metro area. Having parents, grandparents, and other friends and family who are middle class or higher makes a huge difference when it comes to PTO and other school-related fundraising. We get wanting to supplement activities and resources for your own kids; but, at what point does it become an unfair advantage over lower-income families and students who don't have the same resources? Can you imagine the fuss that would be created if you even suggested sharing supplemental funding from one school to another? How would you handle the disparity?

As a proud partner of St Gabriel’s I am proud to tell you about one of their success stories from 2023.   Movement for Change    In August this year, St Gabriel’s School in Sydney Australia launched its new social impact initiative, Movement for Change. As a school for children with special needs, St Gabriel’s core focus is enriching the lives of its students and enabling them the same opportunities afforded everyone their age, in school and in the community. From K-12, their programs cover social skills, life skills, financial literacy and vocational education and training.    The school’s mission is to make a difference in the lives of its students and to do that the school knows that they also need to make a difference in the world they live in. Did you know, almost 1 in 10 Australians with disability have experienced discrimination because of their disability. Sadly, 4 out of every 5 children with a disability attending school have faced an educational restriction. And nearly half of all employed people with disability reported that they had experienced unfair treatment from their employer due to their disability in the past 12 months.    So, what is Movement for Change? It's getting active - physically and socially! The campaign is focused on inclusion and changing the way people see and treat disabilities.   St Gabriel’s students and families, as well as other local schools took part in Movement for Change this year. Some people set goals of a weekly fitness class for the month, a set amount of kilometres or steps per day, a school walkathon, or an activities afternoon. They got active and spread the word about why they were doing it, and many also raised money for the school at the same time. The funds raised from Movement for Change go towards programs like work education and social skills which help bridge gaps for the St Gabriel’s students. The Private School Village community came together in a remarkable way earlier this year. With invaluable support and donations, we piloted a unique elementary scholarship program, The Village Scholarship. Together, we were able to award six families from five local private schools partial scholarships totaling over $220,000 for the duration of the elementary school experience, pending yearly renewals.    It was a milestone moment for our almost six-year-old organization, as it's the first time a grass-roots community like ours has come together to resource and support others from our community in this way. It also highlighted several things about the financial aid model that we would like to learn more about to better help our community thrive fully through the private school experience.    PSV has partnered with Chloe McKenzie, a renowned Researcher, Writer, Educator, and Wealth Justice Activist, to learn more about financial aid and economic experiences. Chloe brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to this subject area and today, we are thrilled to announce the launch of an anonymous and confidential survey for all private school families.   This survey, which will take approximately 20 minutes to complete, is open to everyone—whether you receive traditional financial aid, pay full tuition, or have any other financial experience. We want to underscore that this survey is inclusive and values the input of all families, regardless of racial, ethnic, socioeconomic background or location.   As a token of our appreciation, you will be entered into a random drawing to win $100 if you complete the survey by June 10 (your chances increase if you complete the entire survey). I’ve put together a list of all the ways the Charity I’m looking to start can help. It includes: -Instead of 3rd-6th, it could focus on all stages of childhood, through high school. We would partner with the scholarships available to provide additional funding in fields associated, to allow funding for those charities to go even further, doubling the good in the community. -I’d eventually look to bring industry professionals in to mentor, teach, speak, and advise. -I would look to have daycare-focusing on inner-city children means understanding mom and dad can’t afford childcare for the others. These daycares would focus on STEM to encourage development and interest at a young age. -I would look at partnering with the local school districts for after school care as well as potential in school teachings-like Trade Schools. -I would inquire into allowing a membership to allow additional enrollees. Every paid membership pays a membership for another child/family. -This would help encourage development in the industry in the Midwest, and could even set up partnerships/scholarships for college. -We could run a monthly publication, teaching kids how to write articles and build a brand about their writing, and give them experience. -Partnering with WTTW Games could get them into the industry right away.
