Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, a day that acknowledges the emancipation of the last enslaved Black people in the United States and represents a pivotal moment in our nation's history. John Woodall, a member of our BOLD belonging group, shares what the day means to him: "Juneteenth reminds me, in the words of James Weldon Johnson, to 'Lift EVERY voice and sing, 'til Earth and Heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty.' Not just voices of color, who are the obvious recipients of the abolishment of slavery, but EVERY voice, as Juneteenth celebrates the gradual freedom of others from the enslavement of their minds against the self-evident truth that All Men and Women Are Created Equal."

Today we celebrate Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. This annual holiday commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Africans and represents the day when news of their freedom reached the state of Texas, the last Confederate state to receive the news. Juneteenth is a critical event in American history as it is a moment of triumph for generations of Africans, past and present. One of our core values at Lavinia Group and K12 Coalition is that “we advance equity in all we do.” Equity is a driving force behind all of our decisions. As we honor this Juneteenth holiday, we aim to amplify Black voices, listen to and learn from people of color, and remain ever vigilant of the work that lies ahead. Let’s take time today to honor the profound struggle for freedom and the ongoing fight for justice that Juneteenth represents. We celebrate the resilience and achievements of African Americans and commit to fostering a future where these values are realized by all. Join us in embracing the lessons of Juneteenth, not just today but every day, as we work together to create a more inclusive and equitable world.

As we honor Black History Month, let's delve into the profound significance of abolition and its ongoing relevance. Abolition, a powerful movement that sought to end slavery, has evolved into a broader struggle against systemic injustices still impacting Black communities. Freedom is more than the absence of physical bondage; it's the dismantling of systems that perpetuate inequality and hinder the full expression of Black potential. True freedom encompasses equal access to opportunities, justice, and the ability to thrive without the weight of systemic oppression. As we remember the resilience and courage of those who fought for abolition, let's draw inspiration to continue their legacy. Every step towards equality and justice is a tribute to their struggle and a foundation for future generations. #BlackHistoryMonth #Activism #blackandpinknational #abolition

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day commemorating the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans in the United States. Yet freedom isn't a singular event or something we simply cross off a to-do list—it's a continuous fight. A fight for justice. A fight for equality. A fight to eliminate deeply rooted, systemic racism. As history has repeatedly shown us, no one is free until we are all free. Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder that our liberation is intertwined, and we will only realize “a more perfect union” when we discard the hate, division, and animosity of yesterday so we can make room for the peace, justice, and healing our shared humanity deserves. Together, we can build a future when freedom rings true for everyone. It won’t be easy. There will be times when we feel like things aren’t improving, but step by step, we will move forward on our journey to a better, kinder, and more just tomorrow. #VLJNJ #Juneteenth #BlackLivesMatter #ProBono #CivilLegalAid #FreeLegalHelp #FreeLegalServices #NewJersey
