As the 2024 presidential election draws near, I'm eager to share my past experience as a volunteer at a polling station, highlighting the profound impact of voting and the urgency for all to participate. My involvement at the polling station was marked by early preparations and a commitment to assist every voter. From setting up essential materials to aiding in the registration process, each step was crucial in facilitating a vital democratic practice. A key aspect of my role was helping unregistered individuals become conditional voters, ensuring that everyone had the opportunity to have their say on election day. This reflects the inclusive spirit of our electoral system and echoes California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D.'s powerful words at the Day in the Capitol: "You are a powerful force in the state of California" and "You are a powerhouse if you choose to be a powerhouse." The low turnout of young voters was a stark reminder of the work that lies ahead. It's a personal mission for me now to encourage my peers to realize the "power of our vote, the power of our voice." As students and young professionals, we must advocate for our interests, from increased funding and opportunities to representation that reflects our diverse voices. Secretary Weber's remarks resonate deeply, reminding us that "California will only survive because it has an educated populace." Our state has made significant strides to ensure inclusivity in voting, extending rights to those on parole, probation, and even those in jail. Her message is clear: we hold the same electoral power as any governor or president—one person, one vote. It's a sobering thought that not so long ago, many fought for the right to vote—a right that some today do not exercise. We must honor their legacy by using our given right to vote and encouraging others to do the same, for the betterment of our society. Let's unite to make our voices heard this election. Today, April 29, marks the first day of early voting in Georgia for the 2024 election cycle, including primary elections for statewide, local, and nonpartisan seats. As professionals committed to community involvement and civic duty, it's crucial to participate in shaping the future of our state. 🗳️ Early Voting Details: Date Range: April 29 - May 17, leading up to Primary Day on May 21. Locations: Polling places are open on weekdays and on the second and third Saturdays before the primary election. Specific locations like Houston County and Bibb County offer additional venues such as local colleges and sports complexes. Early voting has begun for the Michigan State Primary Election, which will take place on August 6, 2024 - not to be confused with the Presidential Primary Election that took place in February 2024. Why is the primary important? Because many local races are decided in the primaries. During the upcoming August primary election, voters can select candidates for various offices, such as the U.S. Senate and local city council positions. Additionally, voters can weigh in on local ballot initiatives and millage proposals throughout Michigan. (The presidential primary in February involved the selection of Democratic and Republican candidates for the presidential election.)

Election Day is 85 days away. Just as I have done for the past four presidential elections, this Fall I will canvass neighborhoods, help register voters, and put up political yard signs. I have canvassed with a friend and done it alone. I’ve also made phone calls on behalf of candidates, but I find it less effective and don’t care for that as much as meeting people in person. Some candidates in North Carolina, for offices from Governor to Attorney General and U.S. House of Representatives to Superintendent of Public Instruction, have radical views on important issues that will impact all of us. It’s important to become informed on these issues and familiar with candidates’ positions. The voter registration deadline in North Carolina is at 5:00 PM on October 11th. The easiest thing any of us can do is put up yard signs to let our neighbors know who we support. Studies show that they do have an impact in close races. Per NC law, signs are permitted beginning on the 30th day before the beginning date of "one-stop" early voting and ending the 10th day after Election Day. (In-person early voting starts on October 17th and ends at 3:00 PM on November 2nd.) No campaign sign should exceed six square feet in area or 42" in height. It is a Class 3 Misdemeanor for a person to steal, deface, vandalize, or unlawfully remove a political sign that is lawfully placed. Do your homework, decide who you want representing your interests in Raleigh and Washington D.C., and take the time to vote. Better yet, work on behalf of those candidates to organize, strategize, and mobilize. Democracy is not a spectator sport. #becomeinformed #vote #democracy
