Next week we recognize National Public Health Week! (April 1-7th) Community Health Workers are trusted front line public health workers doing the everyday work of making a difference in communities where they serve. Emphasizing the importance of community support and advocacy for public health is crucial for fostering mental and physical well-being. As part of next week's initiative, I am encouraging people to take action and make a difference in their communities, and also to think about your organization and how they can further support this important week. The theme, "Protecting, Connecting, and Thriving: We Are All Public Health." Encapsulates the essence of collective responsibility and solidarity in promoting well-being. By emphasizing collaboration and inclusivity, we can work together to build safe, interconnected, and healthy communities where everyone can thrive. Let's unite our efforts to create environments that support the health and happiness of all individuals, regardless of background or circumstance. It's programs like these that inspire Public Health initiatives to address the epidemic health disparities in Maternal Health. "The made-from-scratch meals are just one aspect of an entire wraparound continuum of care...." Feed The Streetz Outreach, NPO has expanded programming and collaborations with vital stakeholders to approach this issue in our community of black and brown women with Agriculture as the medium. Fresh produce and farm to table initiatives can mitigate other health disparities such as a food dessert, food swamp and food insecurity that exacerbates infant mortality and Maternal Health. "Pregnant persons with gestational diabetes and preeclampsia are more likely to experience adverse outcomes including preterm delivery, low birthweight, and infant mortality" according to the enclosed article. At Ella's Kitchen, we’ve long been calling for urgent action to prioritise the health of the under-fives.   The report (below) released today only adds to what we and our brilliant charity partners at Action for Children and the RSPB have argued for years - to set children up for long-term success we have to start from the minute that they are born. That means prioritising both the health of our nation + the health of our planet.   The future for our little ones has been overlooked + underfunded for too long. Happy National Public Health Week! If you’ve never heard of it before, we celebrate National Public Health Week every first full week of April, and every day of the week, a different area of public health is in focus. This year it was: Civic Engagement - Monday, Healthy Neighborhoods - Tuesday, Climate Change - Wednesday, New Tools and Innovations - Thursday, Reproductive and Sexual Health - Friday, Emergency Preparedness - Saturday,   Future of Public Health - TODAY! I strongly believe that the future of public health is all of us! By working together in our communities, recognizing and eliminating inequities, and making our voices heard in the government, we can bring change to the way systems and institutions operate and make being healthy the norm, not a privilege. Today and going forward, I encourage you to get involved in your community, join some organizations that focus on promoting public health (if you’re a GW student, commit to regularly volunteering at Miriam’s Kitchen, join OneTent Health, or explore some opportunities at the Nashman Center). Keep in mind that public health is not just access to healthcare -- it is access to food, housing, education, and much more! VOTE! Make sure that the people who prioritize public health are in power. Get engaged with your city and state governments, they are the ones who have the power to fund community organizations and health departments, build hospitals, and bring local change.
