Did you know that universities pay organisations for many student placements, depending on course and context? Students can pay twice for this - they may have to take time off work, and they may also receive a HECS/FEE-HELP charge. This headline is click bait, and doesn’t speak to the complexity of the workplace learning issue. Looking forward to seeing the detail, but thank goodness student placements, equity, and funding are under the spotlight.

🚀 Exciting Developments in Early Childhood Education! 🚀 Education Secretary Gillian Keegan's recent announcement in Nursery World sheds light on ambitious plans to expand childcare entitlements. With the first phase of the expanded offer already underway, providing 15 hours for two-year-olds, Keegan revealed that an additional 40,000 staff will be required to fully implement the expanded 30-hour program. 👶 Despite initial challenges and criticisms from parents and stakeholders, including a shortfall of staff and places, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak remains steadfast in his assertion that the policy is 'on track.' Keegan, echoing this sentiment, attributes early hurdles to 'teething troubles' and expresses confidence in the initial phase's success. 🛤 With an additional 13,000 staff already hired, Keegan projects a need for 40,000 more by September 2025 to support the full rollout. The Federal Government has announced that some students will be eligible to receive payment while they undertake a mandatory work experience placement. Students studying to be teachers, nurses, midwives and social workers will benefit from this progressive initiative. Learning by doing and reflecting has long been recognised as a key way to develop expertise and the tertiary sector is pushing the 'work integrated learning' agenda. While welcome, the proposal does not go far enough. Work experience placement policies are regularly highlighted as a positive feature of almost every discipline, not just the targeted four. For many students, undertaking a placement can range from difficult to impossible. The myth of the "full time student" living in the family home, perhaps doing a part-time job for some pocket money is completely out of date in the post-pandemic world. Students live complex, complicated, multi-faceted lives and many are financially disadvantaged. For example, trying to find a place to rent is hard enough. Having to forego income from paid employment in order to complete a compulsory placement could mean losing their job, and then being unable to pay the rent. The stress from financial hardship can have a severe impact on a student's ability to continue with their studies. Hopefully there will be a lot more research into the "Commonwealth Prac Payment" and many more consultations will occur before it is rolled out.

Special Educational Needs provision has been in the news a lot over recent months. I know that I can't scroll through a set of reels without coming across a video of a parent berating their local offer for education and how their child is being failed by the Local Authority. And don't get me wrong, they absolutely are. But the challenges are systemic and policy based. How, I wonder, are new places to be created when Local Authorities are prevented from opening new schools and must instead wait for an overly expensive private provider or a free school to do so instead? For point of reference, a local authority may pay as much as four times the cost of a local authority specialist placement for a private specialist placement. That's unsustainable and it's no wonder that budgets are being broken.

Fair Go. Bex Howells has taken up this cause and it deserves widespread and practical support. There are many obstacles to equity in our education and training systems. This is one which strikes after many other hurdles have been overcome and a student/trainee is nearing the end goal of qualification. Far too often, and very unfairly, those who have few resources and/or have exhausted those resources already, just find the practice stages just too costly to do. If we are to increase skills in these affected areas of work the public sector, and the private sector where it applies, have to face this as a legitimate cost of training.
