Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can have a profound and lasting impact on adult well-being. NORC senior fellow Elizabeth A. Mumford and Jennifer Copp of Florida State University dig into their effect on optimism and loneliness in a new article. Children who undergo difficult life experiences are more likely to feel lonely and less optimistic as adults. But research shows that that emotional regulation—the skills that help us manage our feelings and thus support healthy relationships—could offset these challenging consequences. 🔍 Key takeaways: — Providing children with more secure childhoods makes them less likely to feel lonely as they get older. — Supporting family well-being can also bolster the next generation’s optimism. — Teaching children emotional regulation skills early can improve feelings of social connectedness and optimism as youth mature. Elizabeth’s research underscores the urgent need for early interventions and support systems for children who have experienced adversity. By addressing these challenges head-on and providing the necessary resources, we can pave the way for a more optimistic and connected future for those impacted by childhood trauma. https://lnkd.in/eneXhGm2 #PublicHealth #ChildhoodTrauma #MentalHealth #Research #NORC #UniversityofChicago

Abraham Maslow, an American psychologist became famous for his theory of human motivation, often represented as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. He opined that humans have the instinct of having basic psychological needs like food, shelter, and safety, before being focused on higher-order needs like love, esteem, education, and self-actualization. This further raises the awareness that children in impoverished communities, and fatally struggling parents in environs with no functioning system tend to suffer set backs in educational or personal development, with hinders the achievement of certain goals. Helping with resources such as food assistance programs or access to some basic needs could be a little push to attaining their lofty heights. This has been our cause in SARAFACDI! How are you helping the vulnerable children in your community? #MaslowsHierarchy #HumanMotivation #Psychology #BasicNeeds #Education #CommunitySupport #Poverty #Development #ResourceAssistance #SocialJustice

Mendable X Churchdown School (Gloucester) 🤝🏼💚 I've been busy traveling the UK this week delivering to schools and community groups. I delivered an hour keynote to year 12 and 13 about masculinity, patriarchy and accountability. A beautiful session with some truly beautiful feedback and questions: "You turned a room full of skeptics into a room of listeners" - Y13 student. It's always interesting to feel the exact moment where skepticism shifts to a genuine embodied interest. THAT to me is what makes this work so human and so real. The process of sifting through programmed cultural resistance to the gradual arrival at personal understanding and accountability. The process of piercing through fear and replacing this fear with curiosity. The process of embracing your Mendability. I'll be back soon. 🤝🏼🫶🏼 Want to work with me? How was your summer? A question some children and young people dread. As children return to school, it's important to remember that not all of them are coming back with stories of summer adventures or relaxing breaks. For many, summer can be a challenging time due to factors such as poverty, parental mental health issues, seperation, or even domestic abuse. These children may have faced instability, hunger, or emotional turmoil over the past few months. As educators, community members, and leaders, we need to create safe and supportive environments for all students. Let's be proactive in providing the empathy, resources, and care they need to thrive — both academically and emotionally. This really is a passion point for myself, Dr Viki Veale and the entire Miindfulness team. It's a collective responsibility to ensure every child feels seen, heard, and supported. Together, we can make a difference. #BackToSchool #ChildWellbeing #MentalHealthMatters #EndChildPoverty #SupportChildren #InclusiveEducation #EmpathyInAction #SafeSpacesForKids #SocialImpact #CommunitySupport

What a treat to read this Shalini!
Executive coach, advisor and leader with expertise in education, nonprofits and the private sector. Supporting resilient, joyful, and inclusive leaders for strong organizations and a better world.
Sometimes life hands you a beautiful, full-circle moment that reminds you what it is all about, especially when you are part of a community for a long time. This week I got to see Herson Carrillo in person. I still remember Herson as a middle- and high-schooler who I supported at E.L. Haynes a decade ago. Today, he is taller than me! and a resident with The MOMENTUM Residency, a school-based mental health residency designed to train students from DC, like Herson, to return and support the wellness of current DC students. I had the opportunity to support Momentum's founder, Marisa Parrella, when she was first getting the concept for Momentum off the ground a few years ago during my time at Education Forward DC. And this week, I stood in a classroom in my children's school with Herson and my kiddos, one of whom is the lucky beneficiary of his support. My heart is full!
