So in October of 2013, in my capacity as an Omaha firefighter, we made a call to a home of a of a family and there were three children in the family and no furniture. I asked one of the children, I said where do you guys sleep? And he showed me into the bedroom where and three of the corners they had little pile of clothes and he told me, he said we sleep on our clothes and we cover up in our clothes. Where you collect furniture and household items and helping to distribute this furniture throughout our community to individuals and families in need. And I'm glad I was tearing up when he was talking about like, I was just like remembering and I was a little kid. The struggle that my dad went through, we didn't have anything, you know, like we were always like staying at family members houses and. Like my dad will go and find Cushing from couches for us to lay on and sleep on it just the smallest thing that can make somebody feel a little bit more human, right? Having bed sheets, having a pillow. I, I can't imagine what that feels like. Did not have a bed. I mean, to most of us, not in anything we've ever had to deal with. It always makes me feel good knowing that we're putting these babies into safe cribs and toddler beds and we wouldn't be able to do that without Subaru. So the last year I did this work by myself, we were able to serve 85 families. The assistance that Baxter has given us with maintaining our our, our fleet, our truck fleet. Last year we served 11152 families. What sets Subaru apart is their willingness to step outside of themselves. And it is truly about the community. Well, it's called the Furniture Project. That's not about the furniture. It's about community. It's about solidarity, not charity. And fundamentally, it's about love. Baxter Chula Vista has donated over $100,000 to the Furniture Project through the Subaru Share the Love event. Beyond financial contributions, we love to help donate our time, get furniture cleaned up, delivered, ready to go. We also sponsor the Furniture Projects trucks. Make sure they're well maintained. Now the fact that there's somebody that doing that, helping somebody, it's just like I'm so happy I'm part of it.

Something happened this year at Bikes for Kids WI, the floodgates opened and we saw a steady stream of people in need of low-cost transportation who were unable to afford bikes on their own, more than ever before.
The 2,500 bikes we've given away in 2024 have been distributed to all people in need, not just kids. Giving bikes to kids under the age of 11 is a critical part of our work because, if you don't have a bike as a kid, you won't have one as an adult. Beyond age 11, kids are often too embarrassed to learn to ride and they become focused on cars as transportation although they've yet to learn how expensive it is to own a car as those costs go far beyond the initial price of the vehicle.
And yes, kids do use their bikes for economic mobility. Kids are often eager to work but when you're too young to drive, a bike provides access to those opportunities. They also help kids get to school and they reduce truancy for many of the kids we serve. Bikes provide access to opportunities. They are so much more than just a recreational option for the people we serve--they are a lifeline.
Operation Fresh Start became a new distribution partner for us this year and that's how we connected to Calio and King, the two boys who helped us reach the new milestone of 2,500 bikes given away in 2024.
