The March 2024 spam updates from Google have hit hard. we know of at least 25 sites that have been slapped with manual actions for “pure spam”. This means that Google is not only using algorithm updates to fight spam, but also taking direct action against sites that violate their guidelines. If your site is one of them, you need to act fast. “Pure spam” is a serious manual action that has been around for over a decade. I love this analysis by Stacked Marketer Stacked Marketer. The last 2 months (Feb & Mar 24) GA4 has reported HUGE spikes in traffic for SaturnOne's website. Literally 12 times in February and 10 times in March. As a Value-Based analytics tool company, we track web traffic with our own tool, plus I use a few others, including GA4, for comparisons. There are HUGE discrepancies in these tools in measuring traffic, conversions, etc. SaturnOne filters out "friendly bots" easily enough and has a strategy in place to filter "un-friendly bots," but GA4 failed to. For both months, we had a period of about 2 days where we got HUGE bot traffic (obviously to us anyway)... literally 10 times our typical monthly traffic in those days, and all from Poland and around it. We do not even target that region at all. As of this note, GA4 finally tagged February traffic as "suspicious", but not March. This can make analysis with GA4 hard... as it is wrong, and filtering out this data for meaningful analysis is hard in GA4. SaturnOne was able to filter out this fake traffic easily enough and our analysis and reporting tool took zero effort to adjust. Value-based analysis and reporting for performance-based agencies can be made a nightmare if you do not properly adjust for "bots" and inflated reporting you get from META (recent lawsuit and settlement admissions) and, yes, LinkedIn.
