Daily Safety Tip for Contractors - Rigging Inspections. Rigging be it synthetic slings, chains, or wire rope, must be inspected before each use for defects. Many contractors use colored tape to identify slings and rigging that has been inspected but the tape frequently comes off from use. Another idea is to use plastic tie-wraps in different colors to mark your rigging. To make the tie-wrap last longer, attach it to the end of the rigging that attaches to the crane or the end away from the load. Tie-wraps can also be used for marking other pieces of equipment. #rigging #inspections #tie-wraps

The problem with wood boxes in the crane world is, when do you pull them from service? This a top tier GC's site with a large sub. They have boxes throughout the job with rigging on them. What are they rated for? I've heard people claim "I have to approve it." as their standard for job site built boxes. Is that a best practice? When it comes to lives being at risk, I think we should have the 3:1 safety factor built in. We should have the security of a weld vs a nail. We should have the reliability of engineering vs random guys experience being the margin of safety. When it comes to everyone going home, it should be a rated lifting device.
