What are you thinking about The Crown Estate and GB Energy's 'Future of Offshore Wind' report, then? The Crown Estate said it is hoping to provide visibility for developers, identify new areas for biodiversity, and accelerate the delivery of offshore renewables. This includes bringing to market seabed rights for an additional 20GW-30GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, for projects to be delivered by 2040, and looking at how it can remove some of the hurdles facing developers so it can accelerate the delivery of projects. At Tamarindo, we welcome the goal to unlock investment in UK offshore wind, but I'm sure there will be plenty of discussion in the coming days about whether this will enable the sector to achieve its goals and whether the proposals will lead to unintended consequences. This is why The Crown Estate and GB Energy are starting consultation with the industry on the plan. For example, most of the new capacity is earmarked for area off the coasts of south Wales and southwest England, in the Celtic Sea. This is in addition to smaller projects off the coasts of north Wales, northwest England, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. We'll look at this more in A Word About Wind in the days ahead, but we'd love to hear if there are any themes that have jumped out to you after an initial read. What do you think we should focus on? Developing offshore wind in the UK session at #innovationzero Ravneet Kaur from Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult is moderating and doing an amazing job 👏with fellow panellists including Gordon McIntosh , Susanna Isola , Zoe Barnes and Gary Connolly Key highlights👇 The UK has a long history in offshore wind, our vision from all those years ago (20+) is now a reality. We have now earned our place on the world stage of offshore wind. 💪🌍 The UK offshore wind sector continues to attract international investment and remains a market leader. If you work in the supply chain at the moment you are in the right place as there is a bottleneck in certain categories, which many of us are aware of 👀 After China the UK has the largest pipeline of projects in the world, but how do we ensure we deliver on this pipeline and help meet our 50GW by 2030 ambitions Following AR5 (☹️), what will AR6 bring? The million $ question. Lots of support going into the sector such as GIGA, SIRS and the roll out of the IGP. Hopefully this helps the industry move at pace which absolutely needs to happen. We have significant expertise in fixed bottom developments but what about floating, this is an opportunity and we need to make this happen. The new Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult floating centre of excellence in Aberdeen will certainly help move things forward. 📣The UK Government needs to signal long term investment 🙏 Plus infrastructure development, grid, visibility of leasing rounds and the consenting process, supply chain growth, innovation roll out at speed and skills (bottom line is we need more people in the industry) Let’s not forget that despite these ongoing challenges this is in fact an opportunity which UK Plc needs to capitalise on and we must drive UK and local content NOF and Energi Coast will continue to suppprt this industry and ensure our members have the best profile possible to tap into the supply chain opportunities that exist now and into the future #offshorewind #energytransition #netzrro #nof #energicoast

That is a unique project that has been completed in the UK. I believe it would be beneficial to see how other remote regions around the world may benefit from the usage of wind farms. I may speak from what is closest to me. The Shetland Islands seem to have the same situation as does the Russian island called Sakhalin in terms of its development and proximity to mainland. The island’s remoteness leads to the expensive transportation of fossil fuel by water. While such a project may be expensive, it would bring down the costs of electricity for Sakhalin residents and contribute to habitat conservation of abundant wildlife. That is why following projects like this one is important for many countries that have territories with difficult access. #wind #remoteproject #renewables #windfarms #onshorewind #onshore
We are thrilled to announce that the Shetland Islands have been connected to the GB electricity grid for the first time, thanks to the completion of the Viking Wind Farm by SSE Renewables and a 260km subsea transmission link by SSEN Transmission ! The Viking Wind Farm, with its 103 Vestas turbines, is set to become the UK’s most productive onshore wind farm, generating enough clean energy to power nearly 500,000 homes annually. This marks a significant milestone in the UK’s mission to deliver clean power by 2030. These projects represent over £1 billion of investment as part of our £20.5 billion commitment to clean energy infrastructure by 2027. Beyond the clean energy, the projects have supported 650 jobs and contributed £125 million to the local Shetland economy during peak construction. The Viking Community Fund will provide over £70 million in support for local initiatives throughout the lifetime of the wind farm. This achievement underscores our commitment to delivering clean energy and driving sustainable economic growth. A huge thank you to everyone involved in making this a reality!
