A fellow creator asked recently why I stick with my #freelance #journalism work. The main answer is simple: I can't put the work down. I most often pitch stories rather than take assignments, so I have the luxury of being free to seek out / connect with inspirational makers and doers who are shaping our community. There's another important reason I do the work, though: Networking, friends. While the work doesn't pay the same as #marketing, #communications, #PR, etc., it puts me in touch with decision makers and _helps them_ get their message out. That builds goodwill, and while it doesn't result in an immediate boost to my bottom line, the community benefits, and what goes around comes around 😉💡 In my experience, the average business leader doesn't have the patience for this kind of circuitous growth strategy. I pushed and pushed for this "tactic" when I worked for others, but I rarely got far. I put quotes around "tactic" because it's not really that -- I just believe in sharing good news and getting excited about people and orgs that are doing good. Takeaway: Sometimes, the only way to do what you absolutely feel you have to do is to take the reins and do it yourself. What world-changing thing are you just dying to do or try? I wrote about Blizzard's Overwatch 2 esports efforts last week, and one thing that stood out is how omnipresent Saudi Arabia is... - in 2022, Saudi Arabia announced a government-funded gaming company called Savvy and said it had bought esports orgs ESL/FaceIt for $1.5 billion - the new 2024 version of Overwatch 2 esports is an open competition (anyone can get on a team and compete) that runs on the FaceIt platform - the two in-person events for the Overwatch Champion Series this year will be held at Dreamhack (first was Dallas, next one's in Sweden). Dreamhack is part of ESL/FaceIt, now owned by Savvy - Overwatch is one of the games that'll be in July's Esports World Cup, a tournament in Riyadh and backed by the government. Esports Charts & Streams Charts have partnered with publisher KRAFTON Inc. to support its upcoming esports initiatives. The partnership will see Esports Charts give Krafton access to Esports Charts’ Event Dashboard, which has historical data on past events and coverage of incoming tournaments. This collaboration “aims to leverage a holistic view of PUBG:Battlegrounds esports based on advanced analytics solutions”, according to Yevhenii Lokhtin of Esports Charts. Watching people play video games in your free time may seem very strange for non-gamers, but it is one of the fastest growing entertainment methods globally. According to Newzoo, Esports earned about USD 1.3 billion in 2022, and some projections see it getting to USD 4.5 billion in 2030 according to Cognitive Market Research. This is quite interesting because who would have imagined it?! Especially due to the image that video games and gamers had back in the industry’s early days! But it also presents opportunities for the seasoned investor. Esports teams have the chance to earn from their winnings and brand deals similar to all other professional sports teams. At a higher level, there is a chance to bring teams together for tournaments and leagues that attract viewership from all over the world. And that’s beyond developing the games themselves, making and selling gaming hardware, and even setting up betting platforms specifically for Esports.
