Congratulations to the whole PAMANA and PROMT teams on this paper which provides a number of insights to enable the realisation of a more sustainable mining future for the Philippines. This review: "Sustainable mining in tropical, biodiverse landscapes: environmental challenges and opportunities in the archipelagic Philippines" carefully coordinated by Justine Domingo, it provides a holistic and current overview, with clear pathways foward. New study: “Comparing environmental impacts of deep-seabed and land-based mining: A defensible framework” Study suggests six attributes (physical condition, community composition, structural diversity, ecosystem function, external exchanges and absence of threats), sub-attributes and indicators for assessing impacts of mining. But…. the majority of this data currently does not exist, the authors caution: “The comparison of impacts between LBM and DSM is fraught with challenges and likely cannot be done systematically and comprehensively without further data collection and rigorous science-based inference.” #deepseamining #mining #biodiveristy

Great to see that leading mining and metals companies (International Council of Mining and Metals) including BHP, Rio Tinto, South 32, Glencore, Newmont and Alcoa are committed to take urgent action to support a nature positive future by 2030 that promotes the health, diversity and resilience of species, ecosystems, and natural processes. They have pledged that meeting the demand for critical materials must not be at the expense of nature. Rohitesh Dhawan, President and CEO, ICMM said that “The mining industry owes its very existence to nature.
