Reflecting on a Vital Question: What Permission Do I Need to Be Present and Be a Dad for My Kids? In my latest discussion, I explore a question that touches the core of fatherhood: our inherent right and the profound journey of being present for our children. It's a conversation that I believe is essential for every parent, especially fathers, who are navigating the beautiful complexities of parenthood. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Alex Lonati and the incredible team at SpeakEasy Stage Company for orchestrating a remarkable event last weekend. The panel brought together fervent advocates for fatherhood in Boston, setting the stage with the poignant play ‘A Case for the Existence of God.’ This narrative, which delves into the lives of two fathers, was the perfect precursor for our panel discussions. These conversations were not only enlightening but also deeply moving, highlighting the diverse experiences and challenges faced by fathers today. The event was a magnificent opportunity to learn from and celebrate the impactful work being done on behalf of fathers and families by John Badalament, Daniel Alfaro, MSW, LCSW, and many others dedicated to this cause. It was a privilege to be part of such a passionate group of advocates, sharing insights and strategies to support fathers in their quest to be actively involved in their children's lives. I am inspired by the dedication and passion of everyone involved in last weekend's panel and the broader community working towards positive change for fathers and families. Florida's "Father First" initiative, with a budget of 27 million dollars, fails to allocate any funding to mothers who step into the role of primary wage-earners and family leaders after the death of a male spouse. This omission raises concerns about the injustice faced by these mothers, especially considering the historical denial of funding for initiatives focused on supporting widowed female individuals. It's truly astonishing to contemplate that, after enduring a pandemic as a widow—a widow-making pandemic - a monumental experience—they still remain largely invisible within our government systems locally, statewide and federally. Give mothers the independence and support they need to thrive. When you become a mother, there’s no manual handed to you, no roadmap to navigate the twists and turns of raising a child. You figure it out as you go, guided by love, intuition, and a fierce determination to give your child the best possible start in life. Yet, amidst this journey, why is it that society feels the need to prescribe how a mother should raise her child?   From well-meaning advice to unsolicited judgments, it seems everyone has an opinion on what is right or wrong for your child.   But shouldn’t a mother have the freedom to chart her own course, to nurture her child in a way that feels authentic to her? Every mother wants what’s best for her child. Behind every decision, every action, lies a deep-rooted desire to see her child flourish.   So why do we judge, criticize, and impose our own beliefs on mothers? Let’s recognize that every child is unique, every mother is unique, and every family dynamic is different. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to motherhood. Instead of passing judgment, let’s celebrate the diversity of maternal experiences and empower mothers to trust their instincts, embrace their individuality, and raise their children with love and confidence.
