We're excited to share Baby Aliyah's story with you!
At only a year old, we've already had the joy of spending lots of time with Aliyah at the Children's Hospital at North Central Baptist, helping her battle multiple illnesses and regain her strength.
Aliyah was born with neonatal encephalopathy, a syndrome caused by lack of oxygen to the brain during birth. Neonatal encephalopathy primarily affects the brain, nervous system and neurological function, but can also impact other organ systems and the immune system. Because of this, Aliyah was quickly transferred to a neonatal ICU following her birth.
Aliyah has been battling respiratory viruses since birth, leading to trouble breathing and swallowing. After a swallow study conducted at the Children's Hospital, she was diagnosed with silent aspiration at seven months old, causing trouble breathing and landing her in the Pediatric ICU at North Central Baptist Hospital. She needed a feeding tube until her breathing was stable, then worked with a speech therapist on solutions to prevent aspiration.
She spent lots of time with respiratory therapist Mr. Ruben, who Aliyah's mom says went out of his way to get Aliyah equipment, taught others how to accommodate Aliyah during breathing treatments, and gave excellent care to her whole family. Way to go, Ruben!
Aliyah is now a vibrant one-year-old who loves her big brother, playing flute and spending time with a family who has advocated for her from day one. Her mom, Laura, says, "we thank God for the loving, caring, compassionate staff that took care of our baby girl for weeks at Baptist Children’s Hospital. There are countless nurses we’d like to thank, doctors, housekeepers, therapists, chaplains, EVERYONE - THANK YOU!"
Respiratory illness season is around the corner. We're here for your family with a dedicated children's ER and hospital, the highest level of NICU care and a team of devoted doctors, nurses and support staff. Learn more about the pediatric services we offer at bit.ly/BaptistChildrens
