$1B for “targeting profitability for the first time” in 17 years, and after laying off 10% of its staff? And it took $542.8M in VC to get here? What is the point of any streaming service if it cannot monetize at scale and pay artists more? It’s not an indictment of this service, but of all services. They might be right, because stupid money follows stupid money, but a reckoning is coming for streaming services. It has nothing to do with how you feel about your favorite either, and everything to do with the lack of sustainable prosperity at scale. Mass aggregation streaming is content quicksand and using it properly only slows your descent. I’m grateful for the effort, but the execution has siphoned more money outside the music industry than has been returned to it and the culture of fandom has eroded. Is the infinite jukebox we once dreamed of really worth all this? I could do so much more with so much less. We shouldn’t allow software makers or hardware makers and the bananas economics of the VC’s behind them to control the purse strings of our industry, because our money tends to flow upward and not downward. Numbers lie because they suit the people who circulate them, who also control the machines that create them. I’m feeling good about the future though.

Independent music firm Believe has stood out with remarkable growth rates. For the first half of 2024, Believe reported a 14.1% year-on-year revenue increase, reaching €474.1 million ($511.9 million). This growth included a 13.5% rise in the ‘premium solutions’ business and an impressive 23.4% spike in its TuneCore 'automated solutions' arm. However, Believe also reported an operating loss of €7 million, compared to an operating profit of €1 million in the same period of 2023. Despite the growth, Believe highlighted some concerning trends in the wider music market. The anticipated revenue acceleration at the end of H1 2024 did not materialize. While paid streaming trends were solid, boosted by price increases by major digital platforms in Q4 2023, ad-funded streaming monetization remained weak, especially in Asia. The expected recovery in Q2 2024 did not happen, prompting a more cautious outlook on ad-funded streaming for the rest of the year.
