Glad to hear that the United Nations has declared 2025 as the of International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. 100 years ago scientific breakthroughs led to an entirely new understanding of nature at its fundamental level. Based on this, we are now seeing amazing advances in the fundamental engineering of controlling individual quantum states and their interactions. And this is opening up radically new technological avenues, for example for high-precision measurement processes and new methods for transmitting and processing information. Much more to come in the next years and decades. https://lnkd.in/dEkxANmu https://lnkd.in/dNaXytRi

😍 👊 💜 --> Oooo, Professor Karen Willcox, this sounds wonderful! „This talk discusses recent work that #combines classical ideas from projection-based reduced-order modeling with a data-driven scientific machine learning perspective. The result is a scalable, non-intrusive, #physics-#informed approach to #surrogate #modeling. Rather than learn a generic approximation with weak enforcement of the physics, as in other machine learning approaches, we #learn #low-#dimensional #operators of a #dynamical #system whose structure is defined — through the lens of projection — by the #physical #problem being #modeled.“
Karen Willcox will be giving the Ted Belytschko Lecture at Northwestern University on Wednesday May 22, 2024. Willcox is the director of the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin. Thanks to the 10th World Congress on Mechanical, Chemical, and Material Engineering (MCM'24), Barcelona, Spain, August 22-24, 2024 for the best paper award for our work on solving radiation transfer equation using physics informed neural networks. We have started this work to couple physical governing equations and artificial neural networks in order to tackle the dimensionality curse while solving radiation transfer equation with scattering in participating media. This approach will be a computational step forward to include radiation heat transfer with ease to combustion systems in high temperature industrial processes. Here is the link with the winners from different areas. https://lnkd.in/ef5-NVFW International ASET inc.

👩🎓 We are concluding this semester's doctoral defenses with Sandra Sæthers trial lecture and defense tomorrow, 2nd July. Since 2022, Sandra has been working full-time as a Material Engineer at Interwell while pursuing her PhD, and she has now submitted her doctoral thesis with the title "Atomistic Scale Thermal Transport in Metal and Polymer", under the guidance of Professor Jianying He as her main supervisor, and co-supervisors Professor Zhiliang Zhang, Dr. Helge Kristiansen and Associate Professor Anders Lervik. Professor Heng-An Wu, University of Science and Technology, Senior Research Scientist Erik Andreassen, SINTEF, and Associate Professor Victorien Prot, NTNU, has been appointed by the NTNU Faculty of Engineering as the Assessment committee, and the committee has recommended that the thesis is worthy of being publicly defended for the PhD degree. 📚 Abstract: The never-ending need for faster, more complex devices has started a trend of miniaturization that has dominated the electronic industry since the 60s. This trend has led to the characteristic dimensions of components going from the microscale to the nanoscale over the past two decades, which poses significant challenges to the thermal management of these electronic devices. In Sandra's research, groundwork for studying thermal transport across a metal-polymer interface has been done. The focus has been on (I) establishing confidence in the modelling method, and (II) understanding individual factors that should be taken into account before attempting to simulate such a challenging system. This work was done by utilizing Molecular Dynamics simulations. 📅 Event Details: Trial Lecture: 2nd July at 10:15 AM, R3, Gløshaugen Topic: "Adhesives for use in seawater: fundamentals, progress, challenges and opportunities" Join via Zoom: https://lnkd.in/duTBdDjM Public Defense: 2nd July at 1:15 PM, R3, Gløshaugen Join via Zoom: https://lnkd.in/duTBdDjM We wish Sandra all the best of luck with the defense! 👏 #DoctoralDefense # #MaterialEngineering #AtomisticScale #ThermalTransport #MetalPolymer #Research #MolecularDynamics #NTNU #Interwell #WomenInScience
