The intersection of art and culture in California is nowhere more evident than in its glorious murals. These murals not only bring color; they turn buildings into canvases.  These murals serve another function: increasing the sense of pride and ownership within the community for their living spaces. Buildings become something other than mere living spaces; they become liveable art. Artists like Favianna Rodriguez, whose work often addresses social justice issues, have played a massive role in bringing cultural pride and community spirit to the people of Oakland. Art fosters community building and cultural amalgamation. While minimalism in color and design ensures timelessness, it does not elevate people's sense of belonging and pride in their lives. At Riaz Capital, our ethos is driven by a need to care for the people we cater to. Affordable housing does not need to be; it can be a canvas to showcase the art that is uniquely Californian. With Artthaus Studios at the helm, we created the Riaz Capital Art program. Through this venture, we invite select artists to our buildings as their canvases. With the help of Artthaus Studios' colorful flair, we have transformed living spaces from grim accommodations to art. "For Sno-Isle Libraries' reimagined Edmonds Library, we designed and constructed a floor-to-ceiling installation with 3,220 holes lit by individual LED lights, similar to a giant Lite-Brite toy. JA Design Technologist and Associate Shane Leaman designed custom circuit boards to connect the 1,088 magnetic sensors behind the board, which sense when acrylic pegs embedded with a small magnet are inserted into the lower holes. Civic Art ++ [planning items] Civic art plays a crucial role in urban planning history as it helps to shape the identity, character, and quality of life of a city. It serves as a reflection of the values, culture, and history of the community, and can enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of public spaces. -- One of the key importance of civic art in urban planning history is its ability to humanize and beautify the built environment. By incorporating public art into urban design, cities can create more vibrant and engaging streetscapes that foster a sense of place and community pride. Public art also has the power to inspire and provoke thought, promote social cohesion, and contribute to the overall well-being of residents.

This fall, Mary Miss launched a citywide public art project in Milwaukee, a series of beacons announcing a new era for the city’s municipal water system. A pioneer of earth art since the 1960s, Miss’s early installations began as minimalist environmental sculptures constructed on the grounds of museums, parks, universities, and urban developments like Battery Park City. Made of rough industrial materials influenced by manufacturing and production facilities, the structures heightened the immediacy of spatial experience in relation to their surrounding natural environments. Several of these works are currently on display in Groundswell: Women of Land Art at Dallas’s Nasher Sculpture Center, on view through January 7, 2024. In 2008, Miss established the nonprofit City as Living Laboratory (CALL) in collaboration with founding director Olivia Georgia as a way to build capacity to realize complex science, art, and advocacy-based projects that engage diverse stakeholders, community organizations, government agencies, and development partners. Meanwhile, Miss’s ideas were expanding to larger-scale initiatives tied to the urgency of climate change. … Over the last three decades, Milwaukee has almost completely eliminated the harmful release of sewage through a combination of gray and green infrastructure projects like deep retention tunnels and restored wetlands, putting it far ahead of cities like Boston, Houston, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and New York City—many of them under court order to comply with provisions of the 1972 Clean Water Act requiring cities to prevent pollution of waterways during heavy rains.
