Global Head of Credit at Bain Capital Credit

It was a pleasure joining Institutional Investor’s Julie Segal for a wide-ranging discussion that bridged both personal and professional topics. Over the course of our conversation, we kept coming back to a key theme. Taking a long-term view on everything from partnerships, investing, and empowering people has enabled Bain Capital to mirror the evolution of the credit markets over the last 25 years. A few takeaways: 1)     Partner differently: Our private partnership and long-term view affords the opportunity to focus on building true alignment with our investors and partners. It also enables us to lean into more complex or misunderstood products like #CLOs throughout market cycles or to maintain our focus on middle-market private credit where we’ve built great partnerships with sponsors and management teams. 2)     “It’s never as good as you think or as bad as it feels”: This is a favorite phrase of one of my mentors Jonathan Lavine and a reminder to remain rational, disciplined, and to structure our approach to navigate and capture opportunities of market dislocation when they occur. 3)     There is no age limit on good ideas: A long-term view on investing includes a long-term investment in talented young people. This means empowering our young professionals early in their careers by offering them a seat at the table and encouraging diversity of thought. An apprenticeship model is not only crucial for their professional development but often, it offers another way at looking at opportunities. I attribute so much of my career to the mentorship and exposure that I received early on. Thanks again to Julie Segal for hosting. It’s not often that we have the opportunity to look back at a career’s worth of lessons. Listen to our full conversation here: https://lnkd.in/eZErSqHT
