Back in September, my friend Ariel Duncan and I decided to start our own mug business called Schade Freundinnen, which combines the German concept of 'Schadenfreude' with the German word for besties (freundinnen). Admittedly, we only had the idea to start a coffee mug business after the release of Donald Trump's mug shot—to not put it on a coffee mug felt like a missed opportunity. Since we weren't the only ones with the idea to put Trump's mug shot on a coffee mug—that orange face started appearing on everything from mugs to t-shirts-to key chains—we wanted to ensure we had a clear idea of who our audience is. Ariel's a UX researcher, I'm a content designer, so we needed more reason to do this other than its being a funny idea (though that is a big reason why we're doing this). We quickly found that there's an audience for what we're calling the Trump Coffee "Mug" Shot, but they would have a few hesitations for buying it: 1.) It has Trump's face on it. 2.) It has Trump's face on it. With our design, we decided to remedy this in 2 ways: 1.) By putting his mug shot behind bars 2.) By making our mug a magic disappearing mug And so, the Trump Coffee "Mug" Shot was born. Our first product! Right now we're using Printify and Substack to promote it, but we're hoping to open up shop on Etsy with different mugs once we're successful with the "Mug" Shot. But we got busy. We had to prioritize other things—like our health and time off—and couldn't devote as much effort to marketing the mug and our brand as we would have liked. We had such big plan for holiday marketing, but we didn't get around to doing any of them. Is this project a failure? Only if we let it die. If you order a mug today, it won't arrive in time for Christmas, but you will have it in 2024, which is set to be a big year for Trump's criminal trials. Making this mug business work is one of my goal for 2024, so I'll be starting to ramp up the marketing soon. “Arbucha” is the first Armenian kombucha, a fermented drink made from tea and various natural ingredients, rich in vitamins. Our task was to create a new label design for this unique beverage. We opted for simple, minimalistic solutions. In the central part, you'll find the inscription “Arbucha”, with the main ingredient from which the drink was made depicted below, such as pomegranate or mint. In the middle, a square design block serves as a backdrop, featuring minimalistic-style illustrations and floral patterns that express the naturalness of the drink. Melting Barriers: The Abilyn’s Frozen Bakery Rebrand When you hear "all-natural, allergen-free ice cream cakes," you might think "healthy" before "yummy." That was Abilyn’s Frozen Bakery’s challenge. Despite crafting decadent, all-natural desserts, their sales weren’t as sweet as their cakes. Customer research revealed the issue: when it comes to frozen treats, flavor is king. People want to know their indulgence will be delicious—dietary restrictions or not. Ora was brought in to whip up a brand identity that made Abilyn’s irresistible in both flavor and flair. We aimed to stir up fond memories of enjoying locally made ice cream during childhood. The rich color palette and subtle stripes nod to classic New England ice cream parlors, creating a comforting, vintage vibe. At the same time, contemporary touches like sans-serif fonts and vivid photography speak to today’s health-conscious consumers. Custom icons highlight key attributes, and our playful "no-zone" chart invites customers to compare Abilyn’s ingredients with competitors—letting the brand voice shine through even in the fine print. The Sweet Outcome? After launching the redesigned packaging, Abilyn’s Frozen Bakery saw a 40% surge in sales. It’s proof that when you marry great flavor with great design, everyone wants a slice.
