Yixing "Anthony" Gao of Pictet Wealth Management shares his 2024 predictions for philanthropy in Asia with AsianInvestor: Blended finance will grow bigger, but more education and incentives will need to come first. According to Anthony, combining public and philanthropic funding with private capital is growing in Asia, with a focus not only on climate, but also on social topics of education and health. The key to unlocking blended finance’s potential at scale in 2024 lies in more collaboration between public, private and philanthropic partners to raise awareness and introduce government-backed incentives. Blended finance is revolutionising the fight against climate change by combining public, private, and philanthropic resources to de-risk investments and amplify impact. Despite its potential, much work remains to increase adoption and bridge the financing gap for the low-carbon transition.   Our strategic partner, World Economic Forum, recently held a virtual convening to align stakeholder interests in impact investment and blended finance. The establishment is trying to kill “ESG” But they can’t kill Values-Based Investing. In a world where financial decisions echo ethical stances, Values-Based Investing is gaining ground. Whether it’s fair employee treatment, environmental sustainability, or diverse boards and workplaces, values-based investing empowers us to make choices that reflect our principles. This approach is particularly resonant for nonprofits I work with, who are adamant that their investments should not contradict their advocacy. It’s about integrity – ensuring that your hard work during the day isn’t being undone by your investment portfolio by night. Now, we have the tools to ensure that our financial investment choices are in harmony with our values and missions. 90% of EGA member, Nathan Cummings Foundation’s investment portfolio are impact investments. Starting the process in 2018, the Foundation restructured its investments in alignment with their values to advance racial, economic, and environmental justice. They sold investments that were a mismatch, and made sure the companies it owned had good governance practices, such as diverse leadership, and mission alignment. One measure of program impact is #sustainable funding. At Economic Impact Catalyst, we help you find long term sustainable funding by measuring #impact and #storytelling. Here is an example of an #eda fund that can help sustain your programs for #smallbusinesses.

In a revealing survey, only 5% of foundations were found to truly align their investments with their missions, despite 92% being part of impact investing networks. This stark discrepancy highlights a broader issue: many foundations likely inadvertently fuel the problems they aim to solve through their non-aligned investments. It's time to demand more than just token shifts towards mission-aligned investing. We must advocate for 100% alignment and hold these organizations accountable, potentially reevaluating their tax-exempt status if they fail to meet this standard. ✳️Amazing initiatives led by locally-led network organisations like @ImpactInvestingGhana are working hard to structure new investment vehicles designed to address systemic roadblocks ✳️ SDG investment opportunities are many and represent massive markets ✳️ De-risking mechanisms exist and we know they work, they just need to be implemented more frequently So what now? ⏩ All: we need to focus on supporting and investing in locally-led initiatives and funds ⏩ MDBs and DFIs: develop mobilisation targets and strategies, unlock data from #GEMs asap and deploy de-risking instruments more systematically ⏩ Investors: wake up to the investment opportunities in EMs. Spoiler: it can bring you alpha. ⏩ Donors and philanthropies: coordinate and create pools of #catalyticcapital and ensure the most efficient use of such, for maximised impact goals (e.g. in geographies or sectors of most need).
