It's that time of year again - the #dubaiairshow2023 is upon us! As an aviation professional with a passion for the industry, this biennial event is always a highlight on my calendar. #Dubai has long cemented its reputation as a hub for #aerospace, thanks to events like this. This time, from 13 - 17 Nov., the emirate will host top players from commercial and defence aviation, providing a forum to showcase the latest technologies and developments. Recent press reports indicate that there have already been several major announcements of deals and new product launches, affirming Dubai Airshow's critical role in shaping the future of the industry. It is also gratifying to see how central the event has become in upholding Dubai's position as a nexus between the East and the West. Aviation is undoubtedly intrinsic to the city's identity and economy. While I am disappointed to miss this year's show, I will be closely following the updates and discussions. My appreciation goes out to the organizers for their continued efforts in delivering such an immense undertaking and to all the participants leveraging this premier platform to advance their goals and vision. In challenging times, occasions like this exemplify the spirit of cooperation and innovation that will guide aviation forward. What an exciting way to start the week! Instead of visiting the Dubai Airshow, which is undoubtedly a unique opportunity to discover cutting-edge aeronautical technologies and reconnect with industry professionals just a few months after the Paris Air Show, what could be more important for me than to share my analysis on Asharq News الشرق about an upturn in Boeing's share price thanks two good news, one linked to a probable return to grace of the B737 Max in China with a forthcoming order (about 20% of global market share), and the other, of course, related to Boeing opening the Dubai Airshow with a nearly $100 billion day with the massive orders announced by Emirates and flydubai, with more to come in the coming days. The 2023 Dubai Airshow tally of 411 passenger Narrow and Widebody commercial aircraft order announcements was 11% lower than the 2021 Dubai Airshow count. However, Widebody orders in 2023 featured much more prominently than they did in 2021, resulting in a total Market Value 46% above the 2021 total.   An analysis of three major biennial airshows (Paris, Farnborough and Dubai) since 2019 is presented below. This year’s Dubai Airshow is set to be the biggest on record, with 1,400+ exhibitors from 95 countries and visitor numbers expected to grow from last year’s edition. The 18th edition of the Airshow presents an opportunity to welcome many new and returning industry stakeholders to the Emirate, and reflect on the recovery and growth of the aviation and wider aerospace sectors in recent years, particularly in the Middle East where passenger numbers continue to rise. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Middle Eastern airlines posted a 27.3 per cent increase in August traffic compared to the previous year; meanwhile globally, traffic now stands at almost 96 per cent of pre-COVID levels. Dubai Airports also announced that it served 41.6 million guests in the first half of 2023, a 49 per cent increase against the same period in 2022, fuelled by a 43 per cent surge in second-quarter passenger traffic. As the aerospace, space and defence industries continue to play a critical role for local, regional and international economies, more than 1,400 exhibitors – including 400 first-time exhibitors and 80+ startups across sectors including commercial aviation, advanced aerial mobility, space, defence and military, business aviation, air traffic management, emerging technology and more will unveil innovations and trailblazing solutions at the industry mega event. Which Commercial Airshows Saw The Most Orders In 2023? The battle of Paris vs Dubai seems to have been a one-horse race this year, with the bi-annual Paris Air Show dwarfing the number of orders seen in the Middle East at the recent Dubai Airshow. In France, the Paris Air Show was held between June 19th and 25th, with the first four days open only to industry before three more days for the general public. Held at Paris–Le Bourget Airport (LBG), European aircraft manufacturer Airbus saw more than 800 aircraft ordered, casting a shadow on Boeing, which saw around 350 orders, in comparison to Dubai, which saw a total of 246 aircraft ordered at Boeing, versus a mere 66 for Airbus. Overall, this year’s Dubai Airshow demonstrates that aviation is to continue flourishing, not just in the UAE but in the wider GCC, which remains an important and strategic region. Passenger numbers are set to increase, new airlines – such as Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Air – are being founded, and existing carriers are expanding their fleets and routes.
