The power of real values in action can move mountains. Those following me on LinkedIn are most likely aware of my advocacy of working with agencies that have healthy and active value systems. Values that are not merely words on the website or pitch deck but rather values that are lived and breathed by the entire agency every single day. When you work with an agency or group of agencies that do, you'll find that you'll land your desired outcomes time and time again. Value that is lived puts people at the centre of everything you do, and when that is achieved, magic can happen. It's fine for your agency to have talent, but talent in an organization that is devoid of values will almost always fall short of what could have been. The partner agencies that make up Trove firmly believe the same, which is one of the key reasons we formed Trove. This February, as part of Black History Month, we will honor the history, achievements, and contributions of the individuals who have shaped our community and world. However, this is more than just a celebration – it's a time for reflection, recognizing the barriers that persist and affect our neighbors today. Through our Transformation Strategy, we proactively sought insights from stakeholders and community members to ensure that we were purposeful in closing the economic and achievement gap for people of color in Kent County. The opportunity to change our trajectory and advance widescale changes required new modes of thinking, new partnerships, and new approaches. To do that, we knew we needed to change our process. The fruit of those changes can be seen in our 2023-2026 Community Grant Fund. The number of funded agencies led or founded by people of color increased from 9 agencies in the 2020–23 grant cycle to 18 in our current 2023–26 cycle. What a company recognizes and celebrates matters. As an integrated commerce agency, it would be natural to reward business accomplishments and metrics. But we play a team sport, so attributing results to an individual can be difficult. Recognizing and celebrating the wrong thing can be toxic to a culture. What we celebrate and reward has far reaching, often unintended, consequences that can sabatoge a culture in two potential ways. First, it can motivate unhealthy behavior in those seeking recognition. Second, it can actually demotivate those not recognized by killing morale. At Harvest Group, we decided years ago to celebrate and recognize living out our values. It is one of the most impactful cultural decisions we have made to date. Nominations are open to the entire company and a representative committee from every office, largely made up of past award winners select the winners (not leadership). It means something to those recognized and to the rest of us to see them celebrated. I also suspect it means more than I realize to the future health of our culture. Our annual Values Awards Dinner is one of my favorite nights of the year. It shows our team what we are truly made of and inspires us to keep getting better. Leading from your values doesn't have to be exclusionary.
