Referral increases your chances of getting hired by 5X. Yet, when someone reaches out to me for referral requests, 8 out of 10 are generic and lack context. Here are top 3 mistakes you are making. ⭕ Being Too Vague: "Hi, can you refer me?" Which role? What team? Be specific about the position you're targeting. ⭕ Immediate Asks: "Hello! I need a referral for the software engineer role at Microsoft." No context, no introduction. Build a connection before asking for favors. ⭕ Lack of Appreciation: "I saw you work at Microsoft. I need a referral ASAP." This feels entitled. Show gratitude and acknowledge that you're asking for their time and effort. Good referrals take time. Make it easy for the person helping you.
