“I’m sorry Melissa, but you have Multiple Sclerosis…” Those words felt like a ball hitting me directly in the face And a buzzing began ringing in my ears. [I’ve personally seen what MS has done to other members of my family…] My doctor kept talking but the words started to sound muffled As time felt like it was standing still. Everything was going in one ear and out the other. I vaguely remember him holding out a piece of paper and I reached out to grab it. On the piece of paper was a number for a local business nearby to rent a wheelchair. As I looked up at him from the piece of paper, He kept saying something but I couldn’t understand a single word. Then, I noticed a 2nd piece of paper and looked at it. It was 2 prescriptions for disease modifying drugs And I was supposed to choose which one to take. The next thing I remember, My husband was helping me walk out to the car. I don’t remember the ride home. The despair of what that diagnosis meant was burying me. I didn’t choose a drug. I was just drowning in a sea of fear. For those of you who have had a diagnosis that knocked you off your feet… You know how it feels. “There is no recovery” the doctor had said. “The best thing we can hope for is to slow the progression.” I refused to believe that. At that moment, I realized these 4 things. 1. I knew in my heart that this wasn’t true… (having no hope of recovery). 2. I knew I needed to trust my intuition and find a practitioner who would be willing to look at the root cause of why this happened. 3. I refused to stop until I found a practitioner (or a team of practitioners) who would support me to my highest level of recovery 4. Knowing the deep wisdom inside that told me “you can get better”. And that’s exactly what happened for me. 2.5 years later - I was symptom free. This wasn’t a hoax either because 7 years later… I’m stronger than ever before. Believe in your own body’s ability to become well. The process is worth it. Melissa P.S. The Reimagining Autoimmune Recovery Summit is kicking off on Monday, September 2nd. Did you know that astronauts who spend extended time in space actually forget what Earth's gravity feels like? It's true. After months of floating in microgravity, their bodies adapt. Muscles weaken, bones lose density, and their sense of balance changes. When they return to Earth, they have to re-learn how to walk, how to reach for objects, even how to sit in a chair. This isn't just a fun space fact. It's a powerful metaphor for our autoimmune journeys. Here's why this matters to you: 1. Adaptation can be deceiving Just as astronauts adapt to microgravity, we adapt to our symptoms. Fatigue, pain, brain fog – they become our new "normal." We forget what true health feels like. 2. Return requires retraining When astronauts come back to Earth, they need physical therapy to regain their strength and coordination. Similarly, healing from autoimmune issues often requires us to "retrain" our bodies and minds. 3. The environment shapes us Space alters astronauts' bodies in profound ways. Likewise, our diet, stress levels, and lifestyle shape our health, often in ways we don't immediately notice. 4. Recovery is possible With the right support and rehabilitation, astronauts readjust to Earth's gravity. This shows us that our bodies have an incredible capacity to heal and return to balance, given the right conditions. 5. The journey changes us Astronauts return with a new perspective on Earth and their place in the universe. Our healing journeys, too, can profoundly shift our outlook on health and life. Remember, just as astronauts need specialized support to readjust to Earth, we often need guidance to reclaim our health. But the journey is worth it. Here's to rediscovering your health's "gravity" – that grounded, energized state that's your body's natural way of being. Wishing you well, Melissa

It's important to understand what's happening "beneath the surface" And how it impacts those with autoimmune symptoms. Your body is equipped with a powerful healing tool at your disposal every single moment of your life. This tool isn’t the food you eat, the beverages you consume, or the type of movement you engage in. While these are critical aspects to your overall wellbeing, there is one tool residing within you that can alter the state of your health in a moment’s notice – and it’s something you can control! I’m talking about your autonomic nervous system... Simply put, your parasympathetic nervous system holds the keys to your health. The autonomic nervous system is balanced between two opposing systems, The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). Both systems are involuntary which means they act upon our subconscious brain – or independent of conscious thought. These actions include our heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and breathing. We don’t have to think about making these work, they do it on their own via the innate intelligence of our body. However, the SNS and PNS have very different effects on your body. The sympathetic nervous system is associated with the fight or flight response which results in releasing cortisol (stress chemicals) throughout the bloodstream in a stressful or threatening event. In this state; blood pressure rises, blood sugar rises, digestion slows down, heart rate increases, fertility drops and more. The parasympathetic is associated with relaxation, digestion, and regeneration. The PNS is where your body is able to fully heal. Ideally, our bodies are meant to bounce back and forth between these two systems, with the majority of the time being in a state of restfulness to facilitate regeneration and health. Unfortunately, chronic stress and unresolved trauma interfere with the balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic functions, leading to chronic symptoms and dis-eases. Which means that healing cannot happen in a chronic state of overwhelm and stress. Creating a balance between chaos and rest is a matter of finding a healthy relationship with your inner and external environment. Practicing how to learn to relax and soften into stillness can be done through restorative techniques such as mindfulness. Mindfulness and restorative practices are invaluable for helping us create balance between our SNS and PNS to allow for deep healing within the nervous system and cells. While it seems like mindfulness begins in the head, it actually begins (and ends) in the body. Without this foundation, optimal health can only get so far and often leads to long term plateaus on the healing journey. Activating your parasympathetic nervous system through mindfulness is one of the best gifts you can give your mind, body and spirit on your healing journey. Melissa P.S. Would you like some ideas of mindfulness practices that work best for my clients on their healing journey?
