Today is Indigenous Literacy Day, an annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ stories, cultures, and languages. To commemorate the day, we’re acknowledging the amazing work of Australian Unity Foundation partner, the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation. The ALNF is empowering communities—including those with a high proportion of First Nations Australians—with the skills and tools to transform their children’s lives. Researching children and young people's philanthropic and active citizenship, education and social justice, and teaching philanthropic studies and social policy.
Very much looking forward to presenting on this topic tomorrow. One of the dominant findings from the first stage of this research was that primary school educators are committed to facilitating children’s active civic learning; however, distribution of opportunities is uneven: children from more privileged communities have greater access to opportunities to develop their civic skills and practice their civic-ness. This suggests, from an early age, these children are more likely to be prepared for civic life than those from disadvantaged backgrounds, thus potentially cementing inequalities in civic education from early on. This raises significant challenges for education policy and practice and calls for greater attention to be paid to civic learning for all in early and middle childhood. We discuss this and more tomorrow...
Join us for a Live Online Event: Educating for Public Good: A critical exploration of how active citizenship is taught in primary education Teachers and schools play a crucial role in shaping the minds and values of future generations, providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to become engaged and responsible members of society. However, there are concerns that their role as educators is changing, with less emphasis placed upon critical enquiry, contextualising knowledge and lived experience. In this session, Dr Ali Body will present the findings of the ESRC funded research project, Educating for Public Good. She will consider the role of education in nurturing democracy and encouraging active citizenship, presenting the notion of the civic teacher and the civic school as central to fostering a collective sense of solidarity and empowering children and young people to become active agents of change.
