It’s crunch time for nature protection in Australia. 💪 The government is working on new nature laws that must stop the alarming destruction of our forests, wetlands and #wildlife. We’ve had behind-the-scenes access to these new laws, and they don’t go far enough. 👎️ 👀 Today the public consultation has started again and it might be our last chance to take a peep before they go to the country’s decision makers. Pls s/s. We must protect our wildlife, and precious lands, plus our laws, because if we do not, noone will. We need you to speak up, and save 29 protected species. Protected means what? Nothing? Law is law, and to build this hwy, and bulldoze precious, PROTECTED by law species, is not upholding the law.

The Australian Government's bills to establish an EPA and Environment Information Australia are expected to be further debated in Parliament next week. While these are important institutions, if progressed on their own they will create a system where the EPA is administering laws that we know don't work for nature. One thing the Government could do now is remove inappropriate exemptions from the existing laws - particularly those relating to Regional Forest Agreements and the so-called 'continuing use' exemptions. https://lnkd.in/gV4HMmsM

Get in the mood for #WorldWetlandsDay at our Conservation and Land Use Webinar on Thursday, February 1! Krista Spohr from NYS Department of Environmental Conservation will provide an overview of DEC's current freshwater wetlands regulations and how they are enforced, and explain forthcoming regulatory changes and their effective dates. Register here: https://lnkd.in/dV-Hz3KG. In 2022, Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law historic revisions to New York's Freshwater Wetlands Act. Currently, DEC's jurisdiction is limited to wetlands that are equal to or greater than 12.4 acres (and certain wetlands of unusual local importance) and identified on the State Freshwater Wetlands Map. The new legislation will eliminate the map requirement beginning in 2025 and in 2028, DEC's jurisdiction will expand to wetlands as small as 7.4 acres. The reforms will allow DEC to protect over one million acres of critically important freshwater wetlands that are currently unmapped and thousands of additional acres of smaller wetlands. Earlier this month, DEC published an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking, inviting public comment on potential updates to freshwater wetlands protection and classification regulations. The DEC is looking for answers to specific questions as well as general input and suggestions which may inform the potential revisions, including: - criteria for “wetlands of unusual importance” including significant flooding, rare animals, vernal pools, and local and regional significance - criteria for extension of regulated adjacent areas - procedures for jurisdictional determination. To view the draft proposed regulatory updates, visit DEC's Freshwater Wetlands Program webpage: https://lnkd.in/dXZKmg5r. Comments are due February 19, 2024.

The Moritz leaf-tale gecko - or Morry to their friends - are an amazing little creature. Sadly, Morry got put on the national threatened species list yesterday. Morry lives for about 20 years, grows to about 20 cm long and lives north of Sydney. Gets out to near Armidale on a good day. Their homes are being hit hard by logging and climate change. Australia's not doing enough to protect Morry. Our busted national nature "protection" law doesn't even mention climate change. Australia has a problem, with analysis by the Australian Conservation Foundation finding more species were added to the national threatened species list in 2023 than in any other year since the list was established. Australia’s creeks, forests, lizards, birds, woodlands and wetlands need nature laws with teeth and a strong, independent environment protection agency to enforce them. It's time the government to listen to those asking for the environment protection agency to be strengthened, rather than the #mining industry, which wants the proposed body weakened. ACF urges the government and Senate crossbenchers to work together to negotiate amendments to the bills presently before parliament to make sure we get a strong, independent EPA that will be transparent in its decision making and accountable to the public. A strong, independent and well-resourced regulator is critical for Australia to move beyond the situation where vested interests influence decision making, undermining nature protection. Every day and every decision matters for our #wildlife. Further delays to nature law reform risk more extinctions. Time for Parliament to get on with the job. It's what Morry would want. More than a dozen environment groups from all over Queensland have called on the Albanese Government to create strong new nature laws. Queenslanders expect laws that actually stop the bulldozers—not facilitate destruction. Stronger nature laws will give certainty to nature, communities and business.
