Today on R U OK? Day, we’re encouraging everyone to reach out to colleagues and loved ones to normalise having conversations about mental wellbeing. Around the country many ABF and Australian Department of Home Affairs employees are coming together to host a morning tea, share a cuppa, and check in on each other. This year’s theme is 'Ask R U OK? Any Day' which emphasises the importance of having regular, meaningful conversations year round. So while today will come and go, we encourage you any time, to start a conversation with those who may be struggling. It just might change a life. If you’re not sure how to start a conversation, visit the R U OK? website for tips and resource https://lnkd.in/guhQkQG

🧠 As we approach #WorldMentalHealthDay, next week on The Elephant in the Room, will be all about #mentalhealth. 50% of 18 to 29-year-olds in Ireland report feeling low levels of mental wellbeing. But how often do we truly talk about it? In our upcoming episode, The Elephant That Felt Alone, we’ll sit down with Niamh Doherty to explore the unspoken realities of mental health among young people today. From the pressure to appear like you're living your "best life" on social media to feeling overwhelmed by college, friendships, and an uncertain future—many of us feel alone in these struggles, even though they’re more common than we think. You’re not alone if you're questioning whether things will get better. Let’s break the silence and talk about what’s really going on behind the scenes. Tune in and join the conversation. 🐘💬 https://buff.ly/3MZhjiz

When do you first notice that you may be losing your mojo - and crucially, what do you do about it to prevent any slipping down a slippery slope that can happen to us all in that situation? One of our go-to techniques when we begin to feel a bit less than ourselves is to be really deliberate at least once a day - whether at the beginning or end of the day - in asking what are three things we're grateful for. The answers can be as small or as big as you like, but the trick is to keep asking ourselves - make it a habit - and involve loved ones if you like. Slowly but surely this can get easier and some people find this practice has been useful in helping stop that descent for themselves that can signal a decline in our resilience or mental wellbeing. Of course it wouldn't be realistic to say this is a quick fix for everyone, so when that descent does happen, you can find a listening ear to help you work through it at #AfterwordsCounselling as well. We hope you never feel you need to use us, but you know where we are if you feel you do. Drop us a line at [email protected] if you think we can help.

Did you know that 'Men's Health Week' is coming up this month? I thought this would be a great opportunity to highlight some of the discussion surrounding Men's mental health. A topic that often doesn't receive the same level of media coverage as other campaigns, naturally resulting in a lack of awareness. In the UK: - 3 out of 4 suicides are men. - Suicide is the leading cause of death for men under the age of 50. - 1 in 8 men have experienced mental health problems. What can you do, as an employer, to support men's mental health? - Foster a trusting, open, supportive culture. - Management training & awareness. - Promote a positive work/life balance. To anyone struggling, you are not alone, & you have an important role to play among your family, friends & community. Let’s make a conscious effort to check in on our friends, brothers, dads, and colleagues. A simple conversation can make a world of difference. 👊 Konker TomCurtisJevonMaddiPatrickScottRoryDanAshleyMaxineHannahCharlie

Listening effectively is essential when supporting or managing wellbeing of any community. It may seem obvious and at the outset a simple task, but there are actually three distinct ways people listen: listening to respond, listening to resolve and listening to understand. Unfortunately, for many of us, it can be the actions we are dealing with in our own world in a particular moment, that will shape how we elect to listen to others in that moment. In this short paper we explore the types and challenges of listening to support mental wellbeing and how our programme 'Re-Engage and Perspectives' can help you overcome them.
