Today is National Injury Prevention Day across Canada! Many landmarks across the country will be lit up green in support of injury prevention awareness. As safety professionals we know that most injuries are predictable and preventable. Having a strong health and safety management system and supportive safety culture can help to mitigate those risks. By working together with all areas of an organization to promote a positive, open and accommodating health and safety environment, we can reduce incidents, and injuries and illnesses which will in turn continue to have a positive impact on the safety culture. Here are some quick facts regarding injuries across Canada: - Every day, 48 Canadians die and 634 are hospitalized because of injuries. - Preventable injury kills more Canadian children than any disease, and more youth than all other causes combined. - 75 per cent of injury-related deaths are from unintentional causes, such as falls, car crashes and poisonings. - Falls are the leading cause of injury deaths, hospitalizations, emergency department visits and disabilities in Canada. I received this update from Saskatchewan Ministry of Health, via text. I find it very helpful to keep up to date on the latest substances on the streets. To my knowledge, I am unaware if Alberta has such a program. This is helpful to first responders, health care professionals and therapists to fully understand the cause and effect that these substances are having on our community members along with the evolution of street drugs. So my question is how do we create an awareness system? A simple, effective and informative for anyone wanting such information? This is this post there are two items I wanted to provide light to, one the effectiveness that Saskatoon has created and two to explore how it can be replicated in Alberta. One more step further… how do we address such substance use in the work place, school or in any other group? How is your organization step up to deal with if there was an overdose? This is NOT what Truth & Reconciliation looks like. I'm so sorry to see so many of us going without the support we need - which feels purposeful as our Federal Government of Canada continues to ignore our cries for help. After about 1000 requests for information, it was a support center in the Durham Region NOT City of Toronto that finally offered #Indigenous health care support. And it's shocking to see this province continuing to ignore the cries for mental health support for Indigenous Canadians under this ACT. #INDIGENOUS I have relentlessly applied for roles to help and so far, no one has responded. Perhaps Government of Canada can consider allowing some of us who might not have completely ON PAPER qualifications positions that actually HELP those going through these issues that CLEARLY NEED SUPPORT that this government is continuing to deny vulnerable persons in need. MONEY is not the only thing that matters, Chrystia Freeland and I would do this work for free in exchange of safe housing. These communities NEED OUR HELP. NOW. YESTERDAY, in fact. When is this Government of Canada going to fulfill its promise? #truthandreconciliation

In Atlantic Canada, the COVID-19 death rate was 7x greater in 2022 than it was in 2021 (8.3 vs 59.5 deaths per 100,000; StatsCan, 2023a). COVID-19 deaths increased across Canada (except for in the prairies), overtaking accidents as the #3 leading cause of death in 2022 (StatsCan, 2023b). However, this sevenfold increase in Atlantic Canada was greater than the 38.3% increase in Central Canada or the 29.6% increase in Western Canada (StatsCan, 2023a). The Travel Ban for Children and Young People at Tangible Risk of Violence will be Extended by the Swedish Government. To further improve safeguarding children and youth from potential damage while traveling abroad, the Swedish government is considering the introduction of a more expansive travel ban.
