In the world of hospitality, no two days are the same, especially when managing shortlet apartments. The weekend, in particular, brings a unique mix of fast-paced activity, guest interactions, and operational demands. As a Facility Manager, my role is to ensure that everything runs smoothly, whether it’s overseeing housekeeping, coordinating check-ins, or handling last minute requests. Here's a glimpse into what a typical weekend looks like. The weekend kicks off with preparation. By Friday evening, I’m ensuring that all apartments are ready for incoming guests. This means inspecting each unit for cleanliness, functionality, and overall presentation. Any maintenance issues, no matter how minor, must be addressed before guests arrive. From fresh linens to perfectly arranged amenities, attention to detail is key. I also meet with the housekeeping and maintenance teams to review the weekend schedule. Weekends are our busiest time, so coordination is crucial. We make sure that any last-minute guest requests, such as early check-ins or extra bedding, are handled seamlessly. Being a Facility Manager for a shortlet apartment during the weekend is a dynamic and rewarding experience. It’s about balancing the operational demands of the property with the personalized service that today’s travelers expect. Every day presents new opportunities to learn, grow, and refine our approach to hospitality. What is it like being General Manager of an upscale London hotel? To find out, I spent some time earlier this month with Arnaud de Saint-Exupéry. Arnaud is General Manager at Hyatt Regency London - The Churchill and Hyatt’s Area Vice President for UK & Ireland. Arnaud had originally agreed to give me a 'hard hat' tour of Park Hyatt London River Thames, currently under construction at Nine Elms. I'd been interested in doing a 'day in the life' piece on a hotel GM for years and Arnaud generously expanded the remit to let me tag along with him for a day. There's too much to cover in one LinkedIn post, but if you click the link below you can see what we did. This included sitting in on weekly HR and Revenue Management meetings as well as a tasting of new cocktails in The Churchill Bar & Terrace. We then drove down to Nine Elms to check out the 'nearly completed' Park Hyatt. You realise a couple of things very quickly. The first is that this is not the job for you if you are not a people person. Arnaud appears to know everyone who works in the hotel and that's no small feat in a 440 room property. Guests also stopped him to say Hi during our walks and at lunch. Whatever is going on, you need to put on a positive smile and greet every team member and guest you pass. What I took away from my time at The Churchill was a new level of respect for the complexities of the General Manager role and how your ability to relate to employees of all levels is key to success. Don’t get us wrong - all of the above are great touches to have in your hotel. But before you get onto the ‘surprise & delight’ part of the guest experience, you need to make sure the foundations are in place. One of those foundations (perhaps *the* foundation) is housekeeping. It goes without saying that a clean room is paramount - but your housekeeping team does so much more than that. Housekeepers tidy rooms and sort laundry without interrupting guest stays. They’re often the first to spot something that needs repairing. They keep communication flowing between maintenance and the front desk.
