About us: Creating business solutions to poverty MEDA – Mennonite Economic Development Associates – is an international economic development organization that creates business solutions to poverty. For over 70 years, MEDA has been creating business solutions to poverty that are sustainable, scalable, measurable and replicable. MEDA began as an association of Mennonite business people who believed they were called to be faithful in generously sharing their abilities and resources. Continuing in that Christian tradition, MEDA welcomes all who share our values and want to join us in our mission. MEDA has worked in over 70 countries and brings a unique market systems approach to project design that integrates technical assistance and access to capital. As an early leader in innovative finance, MEDA leverages public and private funding to advance social enterprises around the world that are positively impacting social, environmental and governance challenges in their communities. We work in agri-food market systems, focusing primarily on women and youth in rural communities in the Global South. Our success is measured by income, improved processes, increased knowledge, and the creation of decent work.

Dear LinkedIn community, I am pleased to share the prologue of my new book with you all. ✒ 📖 For decades, the world has grappled with the persistent challenge of poverty, even amidst a period of unprecedented technological advancement. In my work, I delve into the interplay between a variety of aid concepts and urban development, underscoring their significance in curbing the growth of poverty. My keen interest in Latin America, especially Venezuela, is rooted in my personal background and exposure to diverse contexts and policy approaches. This has sparked a serious and professional curiosity about the challenges of poverty and inequality in developing countries. From this perspective, my book, "AID development through microfinance," aims to explore the relationship between cities in developing nations and economic aid efforts. The book's contents range from exploring the evolutionary history of slums to examining the role of microcredits, NGO activities, private foundations, and the underlying causes of poverty. Additionally, it offers projections and proposes revolutionary solutions. How can we better comprehend these linkages to effect meaningful change? I invite you to explore the reflections and analyses I present in my book. I am convinced that comprehending these fundamental relationships is crucial for progress towards a more equitable and prosperous world. Most would agree that we are compassionately called to help those who live in under-developed countries, often facing crushing poverty. The Innovation of the Week is Poverty Graduation. A cost effective model pioneered by BRAC in Bangladesh has proven that a well delivered package of interventions can help people move out of extreme poverty. By providing cash transfers to help improve consumption, business training and capital, mentoring and coaching and support to start new income generating activities poverty graduation showed that people can sustainably increase their incomes and consumption to 'graduate' from extreme poverty. USAID is supporting Village Enterprise (villageenterprise.org), one of the groups bringing this concept to scale in Rwanda. Village Enterprise will be working closely with the government to embed poverty graduation in the government's own programs as it seeks to eliminate extreme poverty by 2026. https://lnkd.in/ew_C64py

Temporary financial support for permanent change 💪🚀   Through a programme offering direct cash, multidimensional trainings and savings groups, women living in extreme poverty can get out of poverty on their own terms and conditions. This almost sounds too good to be true, but it is happening! According to #YEPpartner 100WEEKS, 83% of the women participating in its 100-week programme get and stay out of poverty. How awesome is that? 🤩   Jurrian Veldhuizen, #YoungExpert of the #YEPAgrofood programme, was looking for an innovative approach to development aid and this brought him to 100WEEKS #Uganda. As part of his Lead Marketing & Communication role, Jurrian gets to be is involved in numerous exciting projects. For instance, through a cooperation with Wageningen University & Research, he contributes to a randomised controlled trial that attempts to measure the 100WEEKS programme’s impact on illegal activities in wild parks.   🗨️ "It is really easy to work for 100WEEKS, not only for the amazing team, but also for the philosophy behind the work. I believe 110% in the idea that poverty is not caused by attitude, but by means available. "Evidence shows that programmes designed to address extreme poverty can be transformative. By teaching business skills in these communities, our research shows that household incomes soar, increasing annual household consumption by more than 80 per cent and savings by up to 900 per cent."
