On 21 May 2024, the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) workshop on the development of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Materials for the ZHRC’s administrative justice function kicked off in Gweru, Midlands Province. The development of IEC materials is a foundational step as ZHRC gears up its efforts towards raising awareness and educating the public, as well as government ministries, departments, and agencies about its constitutional public protector mandate. The IEC materials are also key to disseminate information about the role ZHRC plays in promoting the right to administrative justice as part of its initiative to promote good governance in the conduct of state affairs, in line with Zimbabwe’s national development strategies such as the National Development Strategy 1. ZHRC recognises that IEC materials are indispensable components of societal developmentas they create awareness, foster participation, and catalyse sustainable change within communities. By the end of the three days’ workshop, it is expected that ZHRC will have developed comprehensive IEC materials for administrative justice, which will increase its resources for its awareness, outreaches, and public education activities. This activity is funded by the European Commission

Part 2 (my key takeaways from the 6th Gender Is My Agenda Campaign - GIMAC Network Strategic Engagement) 🤓: - There’s need to improve income generating opportunities for families thus addressing the issue of children dropping out of schools, and further addressing domestic violence- there’s a clear correlation between gender income gaps in household economy and intimate partner violence. Education's essential role in promoting economic independence for African women and girls cannot be overstated. - To foster economic independence for African women and girls, we must address challenges in access and funding while focusing on strategies to link education to opportunities through advocacy and policy reforms for sustainable development. - We must be intentional in investing in gender-responsive institutions, implementation of legislations, policies, protocols and frameworks and having these monitored. This enhances responsiveness and accountability- who are our duty bearers? - Reiteration on the need for African governments to allocate substantial amount of their national/annual budgets towards inclusive education. The stipulated 20% allocation is not being done consistently across the continent. - While this year’s African Union theme, "Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa" is timely and relevant, it needs to be fostered and embedded beyond 2024 and throughout the coming years; it needs to be lifelong. - Last but not least, our beloved motherland 🇰🇪 was heavily cited during the conference: that the case of Kenya’s GenZs needs to be applied across all countries- calling out leaders and keeping them accountable in all facets of life, governance and economy ✊! So much more that can’t fit here but great to have been part of these critical conversations even as we seek to mainstream gender in education and advocate for gender-responsive education policies and practices in Africa. Reflecting back on the rich discussion on partnering with the non-state sector to ensure access to education for children in low-resource settings at our recent event on the sidelines of the #EducationWorldForum. The event, Innovative Partnerships at Scale to Achieve SDG 4 in Africa, was an opportunity for key African ministers to come together and share the progress and challenges faced by their education systems in reaching all children with quality education. Panellist Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum (MP), Minister for Education of the Republic of Ghana shared: “Grateful to Global Schools Forum for such a wonderful opportunity bringing government and non-state actors together. The ravages of COVID-19 have left a trail of destruction and we are picking up the pieces across many countries across the world. In Ghana, we are doing everything possible to ensure that we improve learning outcomes and, in this situation, the role of non-state actors is so critical and important”. Minister Adutwum acknowledged Ghana’s track record in being an early adopter of partnering with the non-state sector, and that African nations need to “step up” and see “children as a true investment in [achieving] socio-economic transformation” in their societies if they wish to achieve long-term development objectives. His comments reiterated how non-state partnerships have been integral to ensuring every child has access to an education and outlined how this “transformation is happening”. The Minister remarked on the benefits of measuring and tracking data on non-state providers and being able to see the human capital gains made from investing in non-state collaboration.
