In honor of Women's History Month, we will be spotlighting several of our employees. First up is Garima Sharma, one of our best and brightest Platform Architects. What are the biggest challenges or barrier women still face in the workplace today? Even though progress has been made, women still only represent one-third of tech workers. Women continue to face challenges with work-life balance, unconscious bias, and navigating career breaks. What advice would you give to young women today looking to follow their dreams and ambitions or starting their careers? In my opinion, women must invest in their learning, build a strong network, including coaches and mentors, and create a personal brand. Who are the women who inspire you the most? I really admire Indra Nooyi and how she promotes women. Her rise, from modest beginnings to leading one of the largest companies in the world while balancing her personal life and family with strength, is a true inspiration. What are your favorite activities outside of work? I enjoy regular Pilates and hiking, which provides me with mental strength and energy. I continue to improve through certifications and also enjoy professional networking.

Last month, the WSJ featured a section entitled "More Women are Reaching the C-Suite." The focus was on the growth of women becoming financial advisors and reaching executive positions in wealth management companies. Since my husband and three sons all work in this field, I took great interest in the articles. Several high-achieving women leaders were interviewed, women with amazing backgrounds. Their advice to their younger counterparts? - Be you. You have a unique skillset, unique perspective and work style; use them. - Seek out mentors, men and women, who will support your career goals. - Raise your hand. Step up. One area that was not specifically addressed was EQ. These days, IQ is important, but emotional intelligence and IQ together will help to create a corporate culture that embraces differences and uses them to the advantage of the greater good of the organization. Most importantly, each person and each organization must start with their "why." Why does the organization exist? What inspires each person to be a part of that organization? Cambridge Investment Research is hosting their annual Ignite conference this week. The workplace is often a complex landscape, especially for women navigating it with traditionally marginalized identities. Microaggressions, unclear promotion policies, and cultures with indirect feedback can prevent women of color from thriving. Instead, these environments pose challenges for taking risks, suggesting innovative ideas, or expressing concerns openly. The 2024 McKinsey & Company Women in the Workplace Study found that “The workplace is a mental minefield for many women, particularly those with traditionally marginalized identities. To honor the start of the United States’ Women’s History Month, join me for my 4-part series of posts on the state of women at work where I introduce the “broken rung” theory and examine key workplace issues that hold women back. My goal is to highlight what we can do to create more inclusive workplace environments where all have access to advance and achieve their career goals. While more women have been reaching senior levels of leadership in corporate positions, the ninth report on “Women in the Workplace” by McKinsey & Co + Lean In asserts that despite these gains, women, and especially women of color, remain underrepresented across the pipeline. A key barrier to women’s advancement is the “broken rung” – a relatively recent term that highlights the barriers women face when taking that first step into managerial roles, making the initial ascent up the ladder challenging. According to the report: • For every 100 male employees promoted from entry-level jobs to managerial jobs, only 87 women were promoted. • For women of color, however, only 73 receive that first promotion for every 100 men. • In the C-suite, women represent roughly 1 in 4 leaders, while for women of color it is just 1 in 16. Falling behind at this early stage in a women’s careers, it becomes more challenging to advance. What can you do to reverse these trends and accelerate progress for women? The obvious answer is to fix the broken rung – but where do you start? One place to start is to dive deeply into your company’s data and culture to discover root causes of the broken rung. Research has shown, as has my own work with clients, that some of the more common findings you will discover are biases in organizational policies, procedures, and practices, outdated attitudes and behaviors held by management and senior leadership, and a prevalence of gender-based discriminatory acts or microaggressions that negatively impact women more so than men.  Want to know more about these pressing issues creating the broken rung and what you can do to rebuild the corporate ladder?
