🚨 Time to Address the Elephant in the Room: The Wasted Potential of PT/OT/SLP Talent The healthcare industry is failing miserably in recognizing and utilizing the vast skill sets of Physical Therapists (PTs), Occupational Therapists (OTs), and Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) outside of direct patient care. It's not just an oversight; it's a systemic flaw that needs urgent correction. Diversity should also consider discipline of the applicant. Not every non-clinical role needs to be filled by a nurse, not every non-clinical role is best suited for a nurse. It's time companies consider the vast differences in training each discipline goes through and how it might serve their companies interest. But we face a struggle... Stereotyping Hurts: PTs, OTs, and SLPs are pigeonholed into patient-facing roles, ignoring their potential in policy, education, and innovation. Hiring Biases: Non-clinical job descriptions and hiring practices are skewed towards business/admin and nursing backgrounds, sidelining therapy related clinicians. When all the hiring managers of a company are RN's it can feel like you are punching uphill. Underutilization of Skills: The unique ability to identify, analyze and improve key performance metrics are skills that PTs, OTs, and SLPs have developed everyday of their clinical experience. The industry's blinkered approach to the roles of PTs, OTs, and SLPs is not just a disservice to these professionals but a significant loss to all healthcare companies. To those companies, I urge you next time before posting a job opening considering adding OT/PT/SLP under required license. #HealthcareReform #PT #OT #SLP #CareerPathways #InnovateHealthcare #nonclinical #homehealth #healthcareleadership #healthcareinnovation #considertherapists

I believe allied health professions are the next major growth sector, backed not only by the increasing demand from an aging population but also by their remarkable versatility and wide-ranging applications. These professions cater to a myriad of needs, from aiding children with developmental disabilities and addressing adolescent issues to guiding vocational exploration, promoting maternal and women’s health, enhancing workplace wellness, and delivering specialized care for the elderly facing neurological, orthopaedic and age-related conditions as well as preventive health as a whole. With statistics indicating a surge in healthcare needs across these demographics, allied health professionals are crucial players in meeting these evolving demands and driving innovation in healthcare delivery.

Experienced solution-oriented healthcare leader with expansive clinical expertise across the care continuum.
To organizations with case managers or utilization review professionals: 1. Did you know that nurses are not the only healthcare professionals who can review and manage a patient’s care? Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech-Language Pathologists are also qualified for the job. 2. In fact, most therapists inherently coordinate across all disciplines involved in the patient’s care to achieve the best outcome for the patient. By limiting qualifications to "must have RN," organizations are missing out on a large applicant pool. 3. Recent events in the industry have opened up your talent pool. Many therapists are grateful for the opportunity to impact patient care and outcomes instead of just generating revenue. 4. As a therapist, I chose to get my Certified Case Manager certification (CCM) for this very reason. I was blessed to be in a CM role as a therapist, and as soon as I could take the certification test, I did. They don't limit it to nursing, so why should you? Tap into the potential of therapists to positively impact patient care and outcomes.

Healthcare ethics and risk lead| Medical doctor | MBA | Media & Medicine | Board member | Mentor for Future Medical Professionals | ALI (SA) Fellow | MBE candidate Harvard Medical School
Proritising the verification of qualifications and work experience not only protect the well-being of patients but also safeguard the reputation of health institutions. Health leaders have a #moral #responsibility of ensuring that only qualified professionals provide care, which is the foundation of a safe and effective healthcare system. This involves thorough background checks, cross-referencing credentials with issuing institutions, and employing advanced technologies to detect forgeries. Regular audits and continuous education for hiring teams and managers on the importance of credential verification are essential steps in this process. #Leadership #Governance #Integrity #PatientSafety https://lnkd.in/dZ_gTzGX

The Gallup 2023 Honesty and Ethics poll reveals a decline in trust across professions, with nurses maintaining the top spot at 78% trust. Medical doctors, now fifth, dropped 6 points from the previous year. Despite nurses being the most trusted, ratings reached a low since 2004, attributed partly to fraudulent nursing programs. Investigations in early 2023 exposed a network selling fake nursing credentials. To address this, professionals aim to combat unethical behavior, promote nursing excellence, and maintain a positive image. Trust variations exist based on education levels, with college graduates rating nurses and doctors higher. Partisan differences also impact trust perceptions, influenced by the current political landscape. Professionals remain prepared to uphold honesty and ethics amid evolving challenges. We believe in building trust in healthcare by implementing transparent communication, patient education, empathy, consistent quality care, billing transparency, data security, accessible and timely care, cultural competence, patient feedback, community engagement, professional development, and ethical practices. Integrating these strategies fosters a culture of trust, enhancing the overall patient experience.
