The project involved: 🔍 Assessing factors such as wind load, pressure distribution, and structural stability. 🔧 Optimizing the crane's design to withstand environmental forces while maintaining structural integrity. 💡 Using the analysis results to develop design improvements that minimized drag, enhanced safety, and improved overall efficiency. Geotech Engineer 501 Piping problem is still a big challenge to geotech engineers since there has been no clear theoretical and practical advances in diagnosis or prevention since Terzaghi’s confession at below. Terzaghi and Peck (1948) stated, “Piping may be due to scour or subsurface erosion that starts at springs near the downstream toe and proceeds upstream along the base of the structure or some bedding plane. Failure occurs as soon as the upstream or intake end of the eroded hole approaches the bottom of the reservoir. The mechanics of this type of piping defy theoretical approach.” My probabilistic model can help estimate the fine particle sizes of soil/tailing materials susceptible to internal erosions (official academic terminology of piping) based on its gradation and relative density information and can calculate the passing/retention probability of eroded particles against the accessible opening sizes of filter. In my class, I will teach students how to use the probabilistic model from field and lab data inputs to mass balance checks of erodible fine particles before/after the filtration process. New publication available 📣 The stress status inspection of the #composite blade structure on a modern #windturbine is challenging in engineering sense. In past decades, many studies have investigated the aero-elastic performance of the slender composite blade structures using numerical approaches such as fluid structure interaction (#FSI) methods, while the fidelities of the FSI participants are restrained, or facing with the difficulties in affording massive computational costs when a higher fidelity of the field quantities are expected. In our recent work, a more effective general FSI framework is developed, combining the advantages of 1) the high-fidelity #CFD for turbulent aerodynamics; 2) a computational efficient two-way FSI procedure couples with robust multibody dynamics (#MBD) model for an accurate prediction of the structural dynamics; and 3) a fully resolved #FEA analysis providing detailed stress field distributions considering the composite material and layup configurations. This general FSI framework can be also applicable for many other engineering applications, our upcoming work is utilising it for analysing the dynamics and the stress status variations of the composite blade structure on a floating offshore wind turbine (#FOWT), which is a much more complicated but quite interesting topic to focus on, hope we can contribute a little bit to the future development of FOWT composite blades in improving the structural integreties and reliabilities, stay tuned.
