Sedona, Arizona Population: 9,684 Where to stay: Adobe Grand Villas Why it’s a great small town: Big cities get all the credit for art events and alternative lifestyles, but Sedona proves small towns have just as much to offer. Surrounded by the arid Arizona desert, this town attracts nature lovers with the canyons and giant rock formations of Red Rock State Park. It is also a sort of congregation point for neo-hippies and the spiritually inclined. If you’re more into boho chic and comfort than desert camping, the town has plenty of that as well. Also of note, this small town established the first library in the entire state — it was the first Carnegie Library outside of Pennsylvania and Scotland. Andrew Carnegie himself even funded it. Today, this small community has become an epicenter for Transcendental Meditation, with one of the world's largest training centers. Recently, I had the honor of participating as a speaker at the Municipal Seminar on Planning and Territorial Ordering in Villa Altagracia, Dominican Republic. This important community event was organized by the Foundation for the Development of Villa Altagracia (FUDEVA), as part of the "Legacy Cities Community of Practice" project of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy - Latin America and the Caribbean. Highlights from my presentation: Strategic Planning for Sustainable Development: The discussion underscored the critical importance of comprehensive strategic planning for sustainable development and collective well-being. We emphasized the need for effective coordination and smooth collaboration among various sectors and actors. Innovation and Creativity in Urban Solutions: The session addressed the urgency of fostering innovation and creativity to tackle current urban and territorial challenges. We focused on innovative and practical solutions. Empowerment and Community Equity: We highlighted the importance of community empowerment within the planning process. We aligned with the principles of equity and the strengthening of social networks to achieve more inclusive results. Collaboration and Feedback: We underscored the importance of constant feedback and collaboration among community managers. This is crucial for exchanging experiences, developing synergies, and creating effective spaces for communication and continuous learning. I extend my deepest thanks to all the organizers and participants for their dedication and valuable contributions. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲? 🤔 It is often said that knowledge is power. Here at the Committee for Greater Hobart, research is one of the key tools we are using to focus our thinking and start conversations about the future of our region. As part of our foundation research, our 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 has shed light on what is happening in five cities around the world that have a lot in common with Greater Hobart – Austin, Texas; Auckland, New Zealand; Ljubljana, Slovenia; Portland, Oregon; and Coffs Harbour, New South Wales. The research focused on what these cities have done to improve their economies and the lives of their people, and how they’ve tapped into their regional advantages.  The Report is not designed for us to make recommendations or come up with the answers – it simply provides food for thought/discussion on what might work for Greater Hobart. One of the key themes to come out of the research was 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 - looking at population density, a key driver of diversity, vibrancy and culture; and how the other cities manage high densities through diversity of housing and multi-modal transport.  Next week we will be holding a workshop with Committee Members to discuss the State Government’s 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻.
