In this Monday's edition of our Newsletter, we introduced a new team member who is an Analyst at John Hancock writing about Fixed Income and that career path for students. Welcome Nicholas Forcione! My name is Nicholas (or Nick for short) Forcione and I am beyond excited to be joining The Morning Investor team. First, a little bit about myself: I recently graduated last spring from Bentley University in Waltham, MA, with a dual BS/MS degree in Finance. Throughout my four years at Bentley, I held high-ranking positions in two on-campus investment groups and also wrote for the school newspaper. I also had three internships, one at a boutique investment banking firm and two in equity research. I now work full-time at Manulife/John Hancock out of our Boston office as a credit research analyst on the Financial Institutions team, assisting in covering U.S. Banks and Credit Card Asset-Backed Securities (“ABS”). A little more color on my job: The division of the firm that I work in invests in bonds on behalf of the firm. We invest out of what is called a “General Account” or “GA”, which basically means that since John Hancock is a life insurance company, the capital we use to invest comes from premiums from insurance policies that the company underwrites. We take a very conservative credit approach. We only invest in investment-grade bonds and do not invest in any high-yield credits or “junk bonds”. What I’ll be writing about: Anything fixed income related, really. It’s the life I live day-to-day now, and it gives me the chance to keep learning (as there’s always more to learn), while also educating the readers. I’ll also be touching on anything bank or ABS-related, whether it’s news, overall topics that I feel could be interesting to know/learn about, trends in the industry, economic trends/news and its effect on the industry, etc. Why I’m qualified: I know a lot of college students subscribed to this newsletter will have questions on landing an internship or a full-time job. Well, I’ve been through both of those processes before. So, please, ask away. I’d be more than willing to help. That’s the main reason why TMI was founded. As for the fixed income side of things, I have been living this journey on a day-to-day basis for six months now. Of course, I’m no expert and would never consider myself one. But, over these last six months, I’ve learned a lot about my coverage area and general fixed income, and feel that I could provide substantial value-added to anyone interested. In closing, I encourage anyone to reach out if you have any questions at all. I’d be more than willing to answer. I’m excited to begin my writing journey on TMI, and above all else, continue to educate the next generation! If you are interested in connecting further or want to learn about something specific, leave questions in the comments below! #finance #fixedincome #financeinternship #financialanalyst #credit

Co-Founder of $56M real estate private equity firm | Transitioned from 6-figures actuarial career to full-time real estate investor | Guiding other professionals in reaching financial independence (FIRE)
On this December marks my one-year (+3 months internship) anniversary as a mortgage broker! Sharing here some common questions about my shift from a six-figure salary as an actuarial manager: > Why the change? A: I was anticipating the real estate market to enter turbulence and saw it as a time that presents opportunities. So, I directed my focus towards my real estate private equity firm, as it was already outperforming my corporate salary. With my actuarial background, and with a decade-long experience in handling financing files for our own properties, getting a mortgage brokering permit was a natural value-add. I aced the exams (math was straightforward) and obtained my permit very quickly. This move brought significant value to my real estate investments, expanding my network of lenders just as I was anticipating a tightening of available capital. > What are your goals as a mortgage broker? A: I've set a humble target of assisting in average 2 clients monthly, a goal I managed to achieve. Leveraging my unique background, I focus on clients aspiring to achieve Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE) status. Looking ahead to the next 12 months, I aim to help in average 3 clients monthly, allowing me to dedicate my efforts to our real estate private equity firm and spending quality time with my family. > What's the impact of mortgage brokering on your real estate private equity firm? A: By expanding my network of lenders, it provides more opportunities in accessing capital for property acquisitions. I also gain real-time insights into market trends and lending practices. This information is invaluable for adapting our strategies, maximizing returns and mitigating risks. The symbiotic relationship between the mortgage and real estate industries creates a dynamic ecosystem. The skills and insights cultivated in one contribute to the growth and success of the other. As I continue this journey, I look forward to even more exciting opportunities in the real estate industry. Thanks to everyone believing in and supporting me. If you're curious about the work I do as mortgage broker, or may be considering becoming one, feel free to DM. If you want to learn more about real estate investing, hit Follow, as I write weekly on this topic. #mortgagebroker #realestateinvesting #privateequity #actuaries #careerjourney #entrepreneurship

Dear LinkedIn community, I am pleased to announce the successful completion of my internship at GrowthLine Solutions LLP, an innovative start-up specialising in comprehensive research and analysis. During my tenure, I engaged in an in-depth exploration of financial products, commencing with an exhaustive analysis of around 100 insurance plans. This endeavour underscored the nuanced dynamics of insurance, revealing that while it may not be a good option for substantial returns, its intrinsic value lies in providing a robust financial safety net, particularly in unforeseen circumstances. Subsequently, my focus shifted towards the mutual funds domain, where I meticulously executed tasks ranging from Net Asset Value (NAV) collection to data cleaning, and the calculation of rolling returns. I analyzed over 300 mutual funds from different types like Large cap funds, Small cap funds, Mid cap funds, ELSS, Focused and more. This analytical approach allowed me to draw noteworthy conclusions. It became evident that mutual funds present a more favourable investment option in terms of returns when compared to insurance, offering potential growth. By examining rolling returns I found that, in the long run, the chances of earning negative returns reduce substantially. I also compared the performance of these mutual funds to their respective benchmarks and found that while there are funds that outperform their benchmarks, there are also funds that have been incapable of doing so. I extend my sincere appreciation to Mr. Vikas Arora, the founder of Growthline Solutions, who served as my mentor throughout this enriching journey. His invaluable guidance has significantly contributed to my understanding of the intricate facets of insurance, mutual funds, and loans. Mr Arora went above and beyond in imparting knowledge, ensuring that each new concept was not just learned but fully understood. His methodical approach to teaching, combined with a genuine enthusiasm for sharing his wealth of expertise, created an unparalleled learning environment.

After 4 years of hard work, I am proud to announce that I have achieved my CIC (Certified Insurance Counselor) designation from The National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research. Up until college, I was convinced that my professional calling was to become either a teacher or a guidance counselor. When I started college, a mentor impacted my life by saying "Sales might be a different route for you, kid. I think you got what it takes. If you do it right, selling is counseling." This mentor offered me a sales internship, and the next semester I changed my major. With that being said, to have the designated title of "Certified Insurance Counselor" is extra special, because it feels like the culmination of a lifelong goal. What better way to view my role than counseling and educating my clients/prospective clients on risk management, business continuity, and asset protection? #CICcertified #goalaccomplished #ontothenextone

Meet Tyriah Callwood! "Growing up I remember listening to my parents tell me about the importance of financial security. I saw firsthand the impact of drowning in debt and before I knew what debt was, I was taught not to be in it. While watching my parents struggle to make ends meet for a family of 6, I always knew I wanted to help but was never sure how to. My family like many other families struggled with financial literacy. My love for finance started as a wide-eyed high school freshman at 15. At that time, I had begun my very first internship as a student teller for a local credit union in my hometown Jacksonville, Florida. Through a partnership with my high school, I offered financial services to my peers, many of which had just entered the workforce. I watched them cash their first checks and helped them open their first checking accounts, some even getting their first auto loans. Having the privilege to share in these monumental moments developed my passion for helping people in the areas that matter most, their finances. While in college, I took my experience on to lead financial literacy lectures for audiences ranging from elementary school students to college graduates. Seeing their faces light up in excitement as I spoke time and time again reassured me that this is the way I want to bring value to the world around me. My next internship as a freshman in college is what helped to pivot my transition to Fidelity Investments! While here, I've been able to meet and share ideas with some of the most amazing leaders and colleagues. Most importantly, I've been able to help my family find solutions to help improve their financial lives. My career goals and aspirations have been poured into in ways I could once only dream of. As a Relationship Manager, every day that I help bring financial security to others gives me the same joy and excitement I first felt long ago."
