An insightful angle in this post from Kate Mulligan, a leader in community health. 🙌 This article highlights the core principles of a community-centred healthcare approach: 1️⃣ Prioritise well-being through non-clinical methods to reduce health inequalities. 2️⃣ Actively engage communities to address barriers. 3️⃣ Support local strengths, build partnerships, and focus on changing health determinants to empower individuals to take control of their health. Joy is on a mission to scale and transform preventative healthcare to improve patient outcomes. We also believe that this transformation begins from within communities by addressing the wider social determinants of health – such as housing, social isolation and physical inactivity – that tackle the root causes of ill health. Our current footprint in 20% of the NHS and our existing ecosystem of 8,000 local community services has developed from relationships directly with community leaders and many other relationships in the complex healthcare system.🚀👨🏽🤝👨🏼🌎 #preventativehealthcare #socialprescribing #community #communityengagement
Sometimes people tell me that the community scale of #SocialPrescribing is too small to make a difference, that only higher scales of population and policy matter if we really want to make a change. I think that's in large part because of historic disinvestment in community development and local public health - we've forgotten that this used to be central to human wellbeing and collective health governance. I disagree of course - we need multiscalar actions, aggregated locally-led practices, and many healthy relationships in a complex adaptive system! Fully agree with you! We need public health to join forces with community planners and community organizers and agencies, and share data generously to understand and improve place-based challenges.
